bowel obstruction after 10 years

It's been 10 years since my jpouch surgery. I was admitted to hospital friday. I knew it was a bowel obstruction as I hadnt had a bm in a few hours and the pain was coming in waves, hitting a peak and coming down. NG tube, and pain meds, 28 hours later, the obstruction released on it's own. They said from CT looked like adhsions. Has anyone ever had them release like this and were you quite sore for some time afterwards? I also ate a bunch of walnuts thursday night that I probably didnt chew properly....any thoughts?
thank you!
sincerely,
4babes,
afraid to eat!

4babes,
I had a couple of similar episodes recently. My CT scan, xrays and barium xrays all came clear. Yes, my pain came in waves. Yes, I was sore afterwards. Though radiologist said xray showed blockage, but my surgeon said there was no blockage. Cause of pain is still unknown. I still get pain once in a while, but not so severe that I have to go to ER.
Hope you feel better soon.

Battled a few obstructions since take down. Same symptoms, same results. Except mine all passed on their own.

I have found that drinking hot fluids daily helps to keep my system clear. Coffee, tea or soup are part of my daily regimine. this has seemed to keep things moving well for me.

Hope you feel better

Derek

Yeah, again : no nuts, no corn, no mushrooms and no raw vegetables. ever. If you have that problem again, I would suggest an anal catheter. I use it when something gets stuck up there. I can give you the site where they sell them. They are a very good tool for us J pouchers LOL. Also, I've discovered with time that using toilet paper is really bad for us. We need to use babywipes, every time we pass stool. Never toilet paper. With wipes, you stop irratation and it helps with eliminating itching and swelling. Huggies are best. Good luck and stay away from the nuts!!!!1

I don't think there are foods that one can't eat. There may be foods that don't work well for some individuals and one may choose to avoid them.

I've never had any problems with nuts, corn, popcorn, mushrooms and raw vegetables. I have had a partial blockage when I ate 'some' raw carrots. But some was like a whole bag and I don't ever chew my food to pulp. And I ate those carrots two days in a row.

We're all different (just like the coloned people) so you'll just have to experiment.

There are no foods that one cannot eat unless one has had previous problems with them. It sounds as if the original poster may have over done it on a food. Like Kathy, I eat copious amounts of popcorn, nuts, mushrooms, citrus fruits, etc. There isn't a food out there that I choose not to eat because of my jpouch.

Wow, this concerns me a bit. It's been about 11 years for me and I haven't had an obstruction yet and I eat EVERYTHING! Seafood, nutts, and veggies. At least I know what to look for if symptoms should arrise.

It once ruled my life. The only reminder I have now are my scars.

I've had a lot of obstructions and have found my key to avoiding them is to chew all foods really well and drink a lot of fluids. If I can get 9, 8 oz. glasses in a day, I'm good.

The pain from a blockage can be horrendous. I was in the hospital once when my dr. who was also a poucher, was having his first obstruction in 7 years. He had an IV for fluids and said it happened because he had been so busy he wasn't drinking his usual amount of fluids.

I had a blockage once at the stoma site, I'm guessing also from adhessions. Fortunately it released on its own as well. I had a sore tummy for a couple of days following, but other than that I was fine afterwards.

My blockage came from eating too fast and not chewing chicken enough.

All the time and it will take a few days for the snorness to go away. PS You might eat walnuts and never have it happen again.

I had my first after 4 years and it was the same thing. God, it was horrible. Worse than any other pain. If you ate something that you associate with the obstruction, steer clear of that food! I also err on the side of caution and eat no nuts or veggies.

I had pad thai the night of my obstruction, which had teeny tiny bits of peanuts.

I miss corn on the cob, sigh..

But you got through it, and that is what matters. Cheers for that!

I've had two obstructions. Both passed on their own after about 12 hours. It's painful! My sides and stomach hurt for a few days after, like I down a really killer workout but worse!

The first one I had was caused by pork cutlets (the tenderized kind) and second was baked ham. Go figure. No one mentioned not eating pork. I eat all the so called no-no foods; nuts, mushrooms, hotdogs, pineapple, corn, raw veg, lobster. I just eat it in small portions with plenty of chewing and water.

I will never eat pork cutlets again. You may want to cross walnuts off your list!
