Okay, I'm new to group. And, some of you have seen my posts for this pain(!) that comes and goes (with the help of pain meds). Anyhow, Jan said it could be a partial obstruction. So, she also advised that I speak to my Dr's office. Which I did. They told me not to worry about --because it goes. Anyhow, heres my questions --For a partial obstruction is the correct treatment liquids (like Health Shakes, Water, V8...) And, when do you need medical intervention? And if there is surgical intervention, do they cut you like they did when you had step one & step two. As you can see, I'm having a hard time with this...I've been through alot...as we all have...and I feel like yuck!--NOT AGAIN!
Thanks for your ear--Sue

Hi Sue, I hear you about feeling like yuck...

When I have a blockage I drink alot of fluids, namely water, and massage the area (whick is always located under my stoma scar) and the blockage passes. That being said there have been occasions when I have had to go to the ER because the blockage wouldnt pass and I got scared. However, those blockages too passed.

I'm not sure if my method of drinking alot of water and massaging the area is necessarily the correct method but it works for me....for now anyway.

Good luck

P.S. Chew your food really good and dont eat too much ruffage (sp) at one sitting.

Thanks Erin...I have had this for about 5 days, but I have been eating...I decided today since the pain got worse that I would stick to liquids. I drive myself nuts worrying about going back in for surgery. I just got out two weeks ago...I fell, passed out infront of my two six year olds (bloody mess) they called my husband...I didn't know who I was for five days...came to & couldn't believe where I was! But I am glad to hear that they did not do surgery...what did they do? Sue

Surgery is an absolute last resort and they don't do it unless you are completely blocked and in danger of gangrene to the intestines. Otherwise, therapy is conservative. What you describe is appropriate for a partial obstruction. If it was complete, your pain would not go away, but intensify and your nausea would advance to projectile vomiting.

And yes, surgery would be an open procedure.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks--That eases my mind a little bit. When I had my reconnect, I was severly dehydrated, nauseaus & vomitting. I was covered in strictures. You made me feel better. Peace! Sue

SLC, your obstruction seems more serious than any I have ever had. I have only had a few that so much pain and nausia that it required me to go to the ER. Once at the ER they just gave me a pain killer and gave me fluids through an IV.

The other obstructions I have are right at the location of my stoma scar. I'm assuming it's scar tissue which is aiding the blockage.

The water and massage almost always work for me. When I can feel the blockage I never eat anything else until it clears. I can actually feel mine clear when it happens.

Anyway, thats what I do. But Definetly talk to you Doc. and do what he or she tells you.

Good luck with it.
