Hey all, I just had the j-pouch surgery on November 29 and just got home from the hospital yesterday. I'm having a hell of a time with butt burn. I've been using a barrier lotion and penaten cream but it's not cutting it. I've also had a sitz bath with epson salts the last few nights as well but I keep pooping myself in it. I had been doing Kiegel exercises but I guess my muscles haven't gotten strong enough yet, I am having issues with control and using pads and a cotton ball to try to soak up the corrosive poop that leaks out. I'm also in a LOT of pain, I don't think the percocets are being absorbed into my system, I've been crushing them and drinking the powder mixed with juice but I am not convinced that it is working. I'm sure the answers to my questions are on the board here I'm just too wiped to go searching and thought I would post. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Kadet Ulcerative Colitis dx 12/06 Colectomy 07/08 J-Pouch 11/11

Lidocaine? Using barrier cream INSIDE? T...i...m....e.... Digestive enzymes might help with the acididity. Metamucile to help thicken maybe. Also forcing hold and not going at every whim and fancy. Good luck. Its hard at first but it gets better. God is Good. All the time.

Kadet, I am sorry that you are having difficult time with it. In addition to the idea presented and others that you read on past posts, you can also try cleaning the area with witch hazel after each BM. Soak cotton ball with witch hazel. The severity of butt burns varies person to person and no one method works for all. You just have to try different things and see what works for you. I hope and pray it gets better for you soon.

I will look into the witch hazel suggestion, and I have tried putting barrier cream inside but that irritates it even more. I've stopped the barrier cream all together and I'm just using a butt load of penaten cream and that seems to be protecting my skin better than anything else. I've been told to avoid metamucil or benefibre for 6 weeks until my pouch heals. Now I'm having incredible gas pains, i feel so sick, like i'm going to throw up and poop myself at the same time all the while a snake with spikes for scales slithers through my abdomen. Man, this is tough. But you are right magic30 God is good and he led me to an amazing surgeon who did a fantastic job on my surgeries. Both were done laproscopically once I am healed the scars will barely be visible. I just have to get through this next little while I'm trying my very best to keep a positive attitude. Any suggestions in dealing with gas? I know I should just read the board, my answers are probably there but I'm in so much pain and so drugged up it's all I can do to write this post. I'm curious. What are you eating? For the first six weeks after my takedown I really watched what I ate and drank. I started with very, very simple foods.....and not much variety. Gradually, I increased what kinds of foods/drinks I consumed....one new one at a time to see how they did with my new plumbing. Eventually, I could eat and drink everything. This was quite a change from when I had an ileostomy. During that time I could eat and drink absolutely everything. So, going back to really watching what I consumed was a challenge. It did pay off! If something didn't agree with me, I held off for a couple of weeks and then tried it again. It was all trial and error. Best wishes! C.E.M.

I'm eating a very soft low residue diet, mostly baby food, bananas, piece of white toast with butter, tea, gatorade, white crackers with peanut butter, soup, plenty of water, things like that. Everything I eat is in very small amounts and I'm eating it very slowly. It turns out that I must have had a partial blockage because I was finally able to 'empty' what was inside and I feel a ton better, the hot tea helped a lot to get things moving again. I think the problem is that I have a lot of swelling post-surgery, I really want to take a hot bath but I don't have control yet and things will get messy lol I am looking forward to being back on a regular diet again! digestive enzymes for gas... God is Good. All the time.

Take the hot bath!!!!!!! I am 7 months post take down and i still take them daily. They make everything better. Hot food like soups, tea, Coffee (be careful with caffeine until you get used to it) will help things move through. Do not wait to eat. An empty system goes to work on itself and produces more painful gas. Eat many, very small portions to help keep you going. Digestive enzymes work beautifully on gas and butt burn. I use the Enhanced super digestive enqymes from life extension. I got them on amazon for about 12 dollars per bottle. They are very helpful. Give this time. I had horrible butt burn for about 3 months. Now it only happens if i eat cajun food Hang in there Derek UC 22 years since 18 Step 1- April 29, 2010 Step 2- November 8, 2010 Mucusectomy w/advancement-2/14/2011 Step 3- May 2, 2011 Can't believe how i feel!!!!!

For the butt burn - After a BM, instead of wiping with toilet paper, use Cotonnelle wet wipes, or any other wet wipes that do not contain alcohol. Then just pat dry with toilet paper. This should significantly reduce the butt burn because it will reduce the irritation. I used to get pretty bad butt burn too and ever since I started using wet wipes I hardly ever get it any more. On the rare occasion that I do I use Calmoseptine and it really helps.

The best solution for me (and I had your problems) is the use of babywipe EVERYTIME you pass stool. Huggies are the best. You wipe many times after you are done. It is very important since the stool we have (without a colon) is more irritating then normal stool. Also, you can use an anal catheter to let the skin heal. Just insert it and eliminate the stool without it touching your anus. Do that for a few days and when it's healed, use babywipe all the time (I bring them in my purse). If you find they are too expensive, then wash yourself with a facecloth evertime you go. That is the key to no more burning or itching. I've been doing that for 12 years and it saved my life! Good luck
