Well the only way to find out is to try it and see!
I would start with just a small amount and make sure you apply a good coating of barrier cream to your bottom in preparation for any burning. Chew very well and drink plenty of water with it because beans in particular can be a bit hard to digest. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Enjoy! One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Shell is right on...make sure you chew everything really well and dont eat ALOT till you see how you react. Ive had chili several times since takedown, and actually spicy things havent really bothered me. One thing I was really craving since surgery was the TMI wings from Hooters. I never tolerated them well when I had UC, but now Im fine with them. I can only eat a few, but WOW are they good!! :-))

Why would you need to chew especially well when you eat chili? All ingredients are typically soft.
I make my chili very mild and let my hubby add more spice if he wants it. Chili is so easy and healthy. yum. I think I'll make some tomorrow! |

I am curious how it turns out for you, let us know!
I have had no probs w/ chili since takedown or even when I had my ileostomy. Actually, it's one of the foods I couldn't tolerate when I had UC that I can enjoy now! |

My mom made chili last weekend. I was a little apprehensive because I thought it have explosive reprocussions. She made a mild (and meatless) for me and it actually had no gas-y effect. Pleasantly surprised.
Spicy food doesn't burn me up on the inside (like UC) but it def doesn't feel so good coming out - peppercinis are killer if I eat too many. Anyway, warm yourself up with the chili! "You must be the change you wish to see in this world." -Gandhi UC dx: 1/01 Step 1: 10/5/06 Step 2: 12/19/06 |

Shelby, only speaking from experience here but our chilis have a lot of red kidney beans in them which I find very fibrous no matter how long I cook them for or how well I chew them. They are also notoriously very spicy and extremely HOT!
Of course I'm the opposite to most people on this site and need to be careful of foods that might cause an obstruction for me so maybe you can tolerate the husks of beans and pulses better than I can? I do eat a beanless mild version occasionally now that I no longer have to worry about butt burn, but I make sure it doesn't have anything likely to cause a blockage in the ingredients. That's the thing about us colonically challenged.... we're all different. One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Misty,
I make a white chili which is absolutely wonderful and the same warming effect. You can make it as bland or as spicy as you can tolerate. The first time I ate chili was on a Friday night so I could sleep in if I had a bad night. I was fine, in fact I am making some tomorrow, yum! Norma |

Shell, do you not eat beans on a regular basis?
One thing we eat here is chili mac, which is chili on top of macaroni and cheese. Do you eat that across the pond? That is YUM. Cuts down on the hotness! Our kidney beans are not hot? And they are soft. |

Oh yeah, chili mac, now that is down home cooking. Shelby, I don't have problems with the spicey chili but its the gas that kills me. So I have to be careful about how much I eat. Other than that, get busy with the chili.

Sorry to have to disappoint you after all, but I like NC style BBQ, not TX style!

Well, Shelby have to inform you that I have been in Texas for 6 months (moved from Cali), and the only comparison I have for BBQ was the California type. Trust me, unless you like all the extra-curricular stuff, Texas BBQ has been great. Next time I am in NC I will be sure to take the local BBQ for a test ride.
By the way, I wont repeat what you said about Texas BBQ to the locals around here, they may get their 10 gallon hats all bent out of shape. Derek UC/Crohns; diagnosed 1994 Ileostomy, J-Pouch 2003 PSC; diagnosed 2006 |

Shelby, I meant that the chili spices are very hot in our version not the kidney beans.
In answer to your question about whether I omit beans and pulses from my diet altogether, well yes I do because they have a double whammy for me. The gas is a killer and I have a high potential for blockages due to adhesions so have to be careful with really high fibre foods and foods that thicken too much. I do eat lots of fresh veg and salads and soft fruits and I have never had a problem with tomatoes, mushrooms and sweetcorn, which is strange considering that is on most people's list of foods to avoid. It's the starchy foods I have to be careful with so I go easy on food like potatoes, pasta and bread. This is a huge improvement for me though considering that before I had my last operation 2 years ago to free off some of the more troublesome adhesions all I could tolerate was fluids. It took about 12 months after surgery to get to where I am now and things are improving all the time so maybe one day I'll be able to tolerate that nice mild chili..... One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Thank you all for all the input. I think I will make some. Spicy foods do not really bother me. What I do is make sure I even it out with eating alot something that will take away the BB. Like I love SMart Start maple brown sugar, I will snack on this all day, and it will help. By the way The Smart Start is really good, and it has 4 or 5 grams of fiber per cup. I eat it all day!! I will let you know how it goes..

I make my chili without beans at all. Only meat, spices, etc. Then when it is done I put it on top of beans, rice, etc., whatever I want. This way I can regulate the amount of beans or not have any at all. Although I don't have any trouble with beans and I usually use black beans or pinquitos. Don't know if that makes a difference or not but it works for me. Oh, I do have an illeostomy so none of it goes thru the j-pouch so I make it good and spicy.
