My wife and 2 daughters both tested positive for strep today, now my throat is sore , so i will get swabbed tomorrow. I had cdiff infection 3 years ago after my takedown and am terrified to go on antibiotics if need to. I found this list regarding antibiotics and cdiff issues.
Safe and Unsafe Antibiotics
LIKELY TO CAUSE C. DIFFICILE:
Clindamycin
Keflex
Ceftin
Ceclor
All other cephalosporins
Amoxicillin
Augmentin

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD:
Cipro
Levoflex (also Levaquin)
Tequin
Avelox
Bactrim
Erythromycin
Biaxin
Zithromax

SAFE TO TAKE:
Macrodantin (Macrobid)
Sulfa
Aminoglycoside
Flagyl (metronidiazole)
Oral and IV Vancomycin

Although Penicillin is not shown i have heard its listed in the "safe to take" list.

can anyone help here as to what is safe?

I am curious where you obtained that information. I do have fears of one day getting C. Diff, but I've been taking Augmentin for a very long time and have never had it. I do know that it's possible to get it, however, I don't know that I would put it in the "likely" category. Considering that we do not have colons we are much less likely to ever get C. Diff, but of course, it does happen. Considering that you have had it before, which makes you more inclined to have it again, as you suggested, maybe something like a sulfa based antibiotic might be better for you.

As for penicillin...since it's so similar to amoxicillin, I would think it would be in the same category, but I have no idea.

Tom had c. diff pre UC and did get it eight years later in his pouch after being on Augmentin for a month (for chronic sinusitis before sinus surgery.) No other shorter-term antibiotics have caused a problem. For strep and URI's, he has taken several of the "middle of the road" ones without incident, including cipro and zithromax. We avoid Augmentin now, but even that probably would not have been a problem if he had not taken it for so long.

I don't know what's "safe" and what's not, but check out saccharomyces boulardii as it relates to reducing the risk of recurrence of c. diff: http://probiotic-research.com/...saccharomyces-boula/.

You can find s. boulardii on-line (I use vitacost.com). I've also seen it at Whole Foods.

This boulardii is same thing as Floraster correct? so would it matter if i bought the straight s.boulardii or Floraster? i would imagine Floraster is name brand and would be more expensive right? what would be the dosage? i actually woke up with my throat feeling alot better so i will wait on the strep test for now unless it comes back later. thanks

I received an email from one of the gastro doctors at CCF and he said if positive that Cipro would be safe to take for strep.

I've added sacharomyces boulardii to my daily probiotic Align, and I think my pouch function has been more consistent. I get it at Amazon via their "subscribe and save" program. Much cheaper than the brand name stuff.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
