I need advice. I had my 1st step on June 6th and been in and out of the hospital with complications (illeus, now they found some clots and I am on coumadin). I came into the hospital on Sunday with fever (101/100)and cramping. They did a cat scan which came back fine (minor the clots) but no abscess or obstruction. They admitted me anyway. Since then I continue to have the fevers on and off and I have lots of pain and pressure on my pubic area and rectum area. They did a small bowel study and also came back fine (I was getting a little food passing thru the rectum) but they ruled out fistula too. The problem is that the fever and pain is not going away. They are saying is normal healing pain but I did not have this pain two weeks ago! It is pretty severe; narcotics only dull it a little. Anyone else developed "new pain" at the 4 week mark? Advice please! Still in the hospital on observation.

One other thing Patricia...when I was in the hospital with an obstruction during my pregnancy, it was never seen on a CT scan. We only knew it was an obstruction because the only output I would have would be pure liquid, only once a day and not enough volume for what should have been normal.

You just had step one right? Has anyone tried putting a finger in your stoma to see if you have any tightening there? That is where my issues were during pregnancy and the only thing that ended up fixing the issue was putting a foley catheter tube into the stoma nad letting it hold the intestine open. Won't help if your issue isn't an obstruction/stricture, but it fixed me in about 2 minutes.

If you mention it to the drs, you can tell them Dr Mowschenson at the BI did this for me. THey can always call him to get the details.

my bag is putting out stool so it is not that... I am in so much pain! And they can't figure out why... I don't buy "normal healing" after 4 weeks. Do you?

Nope, the fever in particular doesn't sound right. It is possible to have a leak and fluid collection (pre-abcess) that doesn't show up well on a CT scan--though that's how they always caught them in my son. Spiking fever was always the first symptom. That' just one possibility--I'm sure there are others.

I had an abscess that didn't show up on a CAT scan until it got larger. I had lots of pain whenever I sat.

Hope your problem is diagnosed and goes away soon.

Sometimes they have to repeat the CT after some time before something develops enough to see. Could be nerves trapped in the scar tissue, but that should not cause fever. Blood clots can cause the fever though.

The main thing is that they need to keep looking as long has you have symptoms.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

I sort of had the same problem with pain in that area and none of the tests showed anything. Then finally the doctor ordered a pelvic mri and showed an abscess.
