Thanks to Shell & so many I have quickly passed from my first bout with pouchitis & the doc put me on Cipro 500mg & it was under control the first night! Sleeping well ever since!! This is the 3rd incident with cold sores coming up behind tounge & all underneath & on side of tounge. Saw a doctor last time who wasn't familiar with my case & he assumed it might be from years of U.C. and in my esophicus also ( though couldn't see & no test taken) He put me on a 5 day kit of steroids. First day 6 4mg tabs, 2nd day 5, 3rd 4 ect.. Cleared up the problem quickly but a little over a month it starts again?? I can't have U.C. with out a colon & I did not have Krones so what is causing this problem? Some lady at work said it is a vitiamin defficency and need to take LYZENE for a few days? Pharmacist said use a mouthwash like Lysterine & it would go away after awhile! Anyone have insight or experience of what is going on??? Thanks J-Pouch Family!!
God Bless! Danny

My daughter has had her jpouch for 10 years and she is still plagued with mouth sores. I think if she takes probiotics on a regular basis, they are less frequent. I am always telling her to take them everyday but she has a busy life and doesnt always do it. I have also just read something about gargling with proxide mixed with same amount of water every day to keep bacteria in the mouth down. She said if she is consistant with eating "plain" yogurt it also helps a lot. Eating a lot of sugary things can contribute to sores. I am sorry to have to tell you that after 10 years it is still going on but there are things you can do to help them to be more infrequent.

Hi Danny,

I used to be plagued with ulcers whenever I had pouchitis. I believe that this is because the antibiotics that I needed to put me in remission caused me to get oral thrush which is a yeast infection just like the other sort of thrush.

I agree with Stell about the probiotics. I still get mouth ulcers whenever I have been on antibiotics and eating plain live yogurt straight from the fridge really helps to sooth it especially if I swish it around my mouth for a couple of minutes. I also take probiotics every day even though I no longer have my j-pouch and believe that this is why I no longer get the really bad canker sores any more.

I discovered quite by chance that the probiotics helped keep my thrush at bay when I was put on VSL#3 as part of a study that my GI was conducting. I used to have to get my VSL from the UK and I noticed that if I didn't get them before my last lot ran out then within a week not only would the pouchitis return but so would the thrush.

I do also believe that mouth ulcers are another symptom of UC and even if we no longer have our colon's we can certainly still get the extrintestinal symptoms.

If the suggestions above don't help then perhaps you could ask your doctor for a prescription for Diflucan which is an oral med for controlling yeast infections. There are also gels that you can buy OTC from your local pharmacy which have an anti-fungal in them.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Take care. Smiler

A few years back, after my doc tried me on entocort (an alternative to prednisone), sores cropped up in my mouth. It wasn't canker sores... it was oral lichen planus. Of course there's no cure, only maintenance. My dentist knew what it was immediately and asked if I had been taking any steroids. It's almost like psoriasis (sp?) in your mouth. I hope that's not what you have! I have an oral surgeon peek in my mouth now every few months to watch it and have to have mouthwashes and ointments to keep it at bay. Good luck and I hope it's only canker sores!
