My daughter had her takedown surgery at the end of June 2007 and has had intermittent sharp pain, many times each day, ever since. It's gas-like, crampy and sometimes bulges occur on her where the pain is. The pain usually focuses on two places: below her ribs and/or on the bottom right part of her stomach. If it bulges, it gurgles when the bulge deflates. Food does not seem to affect having the pain or not having the pain. Sometimes it happens in the middle of the night - it is so bad it awakens her. After her takedown, her doctor tried to figure out what was causing the pain, did lots of tests, and couldn't come up with anything. So, she has tried to "just live with it." But it really affects her quality of life. And she is very depressed. Can any of you help????

Sounds like problematic adhesions to me. The most common site for this problem is at or near the old ostomy site. The only solution is lysis of adhesions, AKA surgery. The problem is that it is surgery that causes adhesions, so it is a last resort. Sounds like your daughter is at her last resort, however. This is diagnosed by exclusion of all other causes and it is typical for all tests to be negative, since adhesions do not show up on x-ray.

Do a search on adhesions here and you will be amazed at how many here suffer with them.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

went through this as well end being adhensions and no surprise for me . Anyhow not sure what to do but for now see if there is any pain meds fendatyl patch i'm on that will help also neutron (sp) my Gi had put me on but made me to loopy so I stopped . My advice is see a GI a surgeon is just that, and from all my problems I notice a GI helps more than your actully surgeon most do not have the knowledge on some of this as GI deals with this stuff on a daily basis.

From experince and my 2 cents good luck.

Thanks for your help. It's hard to watch someone you love in so much pain. It helps me to read your posts to know she is not alone and that what she has gone through and is going through has been experienced by so many others. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to read and post. It's a scary, unknown world which we have joined and it helps to have some "guides.".
