Starting about a year ago I began having problems. I had my j-pouch installed in 99. I haven't had a colon since the early 80's. Last year I noticed that I was having a weird pain in my upper left abdomen right under my lower ribs. It seemed that whenever I would eat something within an hour or two I would begin having this stabbing pain and my stomach would go sour. Some times I would have to vomit to make it better. Eventually my throat started bothering me. I was constantly clearing my throat and eventually my vocal cords got so messed up that if I talked too much I would feel like my airway was closing off. I went to the ER many times because I thought I was either having an allergic reaction or that my throat was just closing up for no good reason. Well, of course the docs always think it's a mental thing. I know my body and I know when I am imagining things and this was not one of those times. Anyway, after seeing MANY doctors and trying several drugs I am finally on a drug regimen that I can somewhat live on. I take a BP pill, lexapro, protonix and sometimes liver enzymes. One of my CT scans did show that I had fatty liver and an atrophied pancreas. Things were going well for a while but just recently the sour stomach has come back especially after eating meat. My poop is also really yellow and I have to wipe many times before I can get myself clean. I do know I have a couple of hernias but the doc doesn't think that they would be causing this. I wonder if I have a section of bowel that is being closed of by scar tissue or maybe it's liver or pancreas probs. I really don't know and I've been to the doc so many times that I don't think I could handle another appointment (mentally or financially). Do any of you have any ideas? Had similar probs?
My surgeon thinks I should drop the j-pouch and go with an ostomy but I am resisting because I am 33 and I really don't want to have to deal with the bag for the rest of my life. I've had one twice before and I know how much they change things. Maybe the jpouch is making me sick? I really don't know. I'd love to hear from you guys. |

I'll throw this in there. A high protein diet can cause liver problems in dogs. I know that's silly but you mentioned that you have a problem after you eat meat. Perhaps you need some more liver testing?
I know it's horrible to have to constantly see the doctor but it's in your best interest to get this taken care of. In my experience, the longer you let problems linger, the worse they get. It doesn't really sound to me after reading your post that your pouch is the problem here. I would take on other avenues before resorting to pouch removal, but that is JMO. What about your pancreas? Have you had that checked recently? Jan is our expert so I hope she will read your story and shed some light |

My gastro doc doesn't seem to think I should be concerned about my pancreas even though it is atrophied in the CT. My liver is fatty but he said that shouldn't be a major concern either. He said I just need to lose weight (big shocker, not). lol. The doc I go to is considered the best gastro doc in the tri-state area so I feel comfortable with what he says but it still doesn't change the fact that I am dealing with something odd. Sometimes I think that doctors don't know what to say to me because I'm like an alien to them. When I had an ultrasound the technician asked me twice what was wrong with my insides and that she couldn't find anything. That's the story of my life. When I had the full CT done of my abdomen they found a large volume of fluid buildup. This was located around my intestines and my uterus. No explanation for that one yet either. That said that it has to come from some organ that is inflammed but nobody seems to know which organ. I wish they could just open me up all the way and dig around until they figure out what the heck is wrong. It's almost made me crazy this past year. I think I will try to cut out the meats even though I am a big meat eater. Hopefully that will help but I wish I could get some answers from my docs. I'm sick of feeling like E.T.
