My name is Tamara and this is my 1st post.I was diagnosed with UC in 2000 and I had to have immediate surgery. Then in 2001, had J-Pouch surgery. As of today, I am scheduled for mesh placement for incisional hernia. I was just wondering if anyone has come across this problem and what I should expect. Thanks!

Hi
My husband has UC and also a parastomal hernia. Let me know what you learn as we are presently looking into pouch surgery for him. He is recovering from a blockage and has had his ostomy for 13 plus years. We will have to address hernia and also possible removal of ostomy. Good luck Polly |

There are several who have had incisional hernia repair here. I thought I had one, but when the surgeon looked (during an adhesion removal surgery) he couldn't find one.
But... he did tell me what it would be like to repair around the stoma site. I'm not sure if that's where yours is, but there he told me he would: 1. Do the sugery lapro 2. Clean up the scar tissue underneath while locating the hernia 3. Place a piece of mesh - and he said it would be a piece about 3x the size of the stoma scar (yikes) 4. Sew the mesh down 5. "Tack" the mesh to the tissue above using what he said looked like eye-bolts The fact they would keep me overnight for pain control clued me in to what I already thought - that it would be pretty painful. Hubby was diagnosed with FAP in May, 1993. Had total colectomy in June, 1993. His surgery was not laparoscopic. He developed a peristomal / incisional hernia in 2000. He had the hernia repair surgery and they went back through is original scar. He was in the hospital about a week. He had a lot of pain because of the large incision. However, his incision looks so much better now than it did. And, he will tell you that it was all worth it. I’m sure that it is not near as painful with laparoscopic surgery.

thanks so much for your replys guys. i really am thankful. i am sorry that i didn't explain where my hernia is, its the complete area of the j-pouch, abdominal, the full incision ,after the 1-stage j-pouch construction i had infection they opened a top part of the incision and a bottom part ,leaving the middle closed sent me home this way and three months after i got infection in the closed part the middle and had to be opened from the top to bottom all over again after of course the top and bottom were all healed closed anyway another surgery for infection of stitches that didnt dissolve, that's what i was told. they sewed me wide open that time, so i guess that's how i developed this hernia? i never asked. now i am going in on march 26. i am not looking forward to this at all! i don't have a hernia on the stoma site though.the dr.said according to what he finds, he'll do the op. by laproscopic method.this is day-surguery. can you believe it ?!send me home the same day! says he's putting mesh in there.the dr. said somthing about after the surgery that some patients develope a blister or something that fills up and that sometimes it lasts for a year any thoughts on this ? can't remember the name of it. i guess what's freaking me out is that the dr. is a general surgeon, and he's never done this type of repair before only the normal hernia repairs not for a j-pouch hernia.anyway sorry for the long post.GOD bless you all, you all are in my prayers. isn't amazing that there are soo... many of us out here? what's in the water? lol sorry just had to say it. again i am sorry for the long post

Hi Tamara and welcome...
I had a inciscional hernia repair, open both times, the first was done as a emergency..The first time I became infected and they had to take it out and I had to wound-vac heal for a month...The second time around was the charm. I hope he is able to do the surgery lapro style! If there is too many adhesions he may have to do it open and then you are looking at staying in the hospital for a couple of days.. My one recomendation would be to buy some Hibiclens or = and shower with it prior to you going to the hospital. My second surgery was done at a University hospital and they ask every patient to wash with it prior to admission. i don't know if it really helps but I figure anything that may help is worth a shot! It is not a fun surgery, of course none of them are...But not as bad as the j-pouch formation.. Good luck! Julie What I say is from the heart...To give, from my experiences..So others can feel well enough to do the same |

Hi Tamara and welcome.
I don't think you have said anything to offend anyone here, we are all fairly liberal minded and don't take offense easily. You are not off topic regarding the pic line because this is all medical stuff to do with your surgery. Unfortunately I can't help you with that question because I've never had to deal with my own pic line. I've only ever had central lines in and have been made to stay in hospital for the duration that they were in. I have had a few hernia repairs and one of the biggest was done open and they used mesh. I was in hospital for a week with that operation. I did end up with a haematoma (sp?) which is what I think your surgeon is refering to when he mentioned the blister. I still have a bulge from it 4.5 years later but have been assured that this no longer contains fluid just misplaced fat tissue. If I hadn't had so many operations myself I might consider surgery to correct it and my other scars but as I now have a perminent end ileostomy my bikini days are definately over so it doesn't really matter now anyway. I hope all goes well with your surgery and I'm keeping everything crossed for a smooth, trouble free operation and an even smoother recovery. Take care One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |
