Until you're surgeries are complete, yes you could still have UC. You have a lot of cuff which should be shortened. Sue
|
If you still have any part of your colon (large intestine left), you can still have ulcerative colitis.
|
Are you sure it's 2 inches? That seems like too long. If it truly is 2 inches you should probably see a doctor who can give you advice about this. And yes, as sue and mn-girl said, you will still have UC in the retained cuff. Things should settle down after takedown. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Grateful Dead

2 inches seems a little long to me too JC, maybe surgery to shorten the cuff would relieve most of the issues. Unless the entire colon is removed (perm ileo) then there is that slight chance. When I had UC most of it was relegated to the lower colon (sigmoid colon?) and after jpouch surgery my UC was gone, now that says nothing of the chronic pouchitis that developed, which can be very similar to UC. Are your doctors sure its UC and not pouchitis? http://www.spillingmyguts.net http://online.ccfa.org/site/TR...=personal&fr_id=3179 http://www.facebook.com/pages/...248335972119?sk=wall Diagnosed with UC - 10/2003 J-pouch created - 06/23/09 Takedown - 09/15/2009 Diagnosed with chronic pouchitis - 8/2011 Perm ileostomy - 12/13/2011

Jimmy, ER doctors are usually not usually GI specialists. You will receive a better diagnosis at your appointment. Did you go to the ER because of pain or bleeding or both? If you are in pain I hope they gave you something to help. Please let us know what you find out. ~~~~~ You can't change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails ~~~~~

Jimmy, ER doctors aren't specialists so it is good you are seeing the GI Monday. Did you go to the ER because of bleeding and pain? Hopefully they did or gave you something to help. There are several reasons why they don't do our surgeries all in one. Maybe you are still healing from your surgery. Please let us know how you are doing and what your doctor says. ~~~~~ You can't change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails ~~~~~

thanks and i was prescribed no meds and also i do not have a pouch yet tiki. When i went there they didn't even care about why i went they (pain in my sternum ) said it was just post op pain which i think is total B.S because ive been pain free for a month and a half. so all they did is scare me but if it is inflammation i kinda wanna have an endo to confirm whats going on down there before i worry to much Diagnosed U.C 2009 Diagnosed JRA 2010 Colectomy 9/15/11 Awaiting J-Pouch

I had cuffitis shortly after takedown and still get flares every now and again. Cuffitis is UC in the remaining rectal cuff. For me it is treatable with cortisteriod suppositories. Although my remaining cuff is only about 1/2" or so. Good luck on your appointment on Monday. I'm glad you didn't put off going to the ER because it can get pretty bad. I just hope there's nothing else going on. www.lifeisapotty.blogspot.com C-diff: 3/2001 UC Diagnosis: Summer 2002 Step 1: 9/10/10 Step 2: 12/8/10 Cuffitis: 2/2011 Chronic Pouchitis: 11/2011

If you don't have a pouch yet then you would still have part of your rectum left. They remove the rest of it when they form the pouch. My daughter had some minor issues between surgeries too. She used suppositories to treat it between surgeries which helped. Don't let it stress you out. It isn't that uncommon and is treatable and should go away when they remove the remainder of your rectum. Good luck to you!

Jimmy, The remaining inches they leave of your rectum can still have UC. This actually happened to me shortly after surgery and an ER doc told me what was going on and I almost threw a fit. When the rectal cuff (your remaining inches for the j-pouch to be connected to)is inflamed it is actually UC, but then it's called cuffitis. I know how frustrated and angry you are, but please don't be so alarmed. And don't forget that all docs are not the same. I have had ER docs that go looking for my ostomy bag when I say I have a j-pouch(like maybe I am hiding it somewhere...my ear, up my nose, i don't know, lol). An ER docs knows nothing of pouches (not slamming them, I totally respect ER docs, but they aren't specialists). I was also just released from the hospital for a massive infection. I had seen my GI twice that week and I knew something was wrong. Both times she dismissed me. I was supposed to have dinner with a friend and her Mom, who has been a nurse for 35 years, and soon as she saw me, she said to go straight to the ER. The infection had spread all through my abdomen. But I also had a scope/pouchoscopy by my GI in October, so that's why she said I was fine. Which made no sense to me. They did one in the hospital and my insides loooked SO BAD. Well, alot can happen to us pouchers/osomates in short periods of time. Always remember this-YOU KNOW YOUR OWN BODY THAN ANYONE WHO HAS "MD" AFTER HIS/HER NAME. Also, I have had that sternum pain that you describe and thought maybe I was having a heart attack. They kept me in the hospital for a while and hydrated the s**t outta me, and it went away. Perhaps you need some extra hydration? I wish you well and I always pray for you. I know how young you are, and I can relate because I am only about 10 years older. It royally sucks. Good luck with your next surgery date. I'll be thinking of you

i was diagnosed the same thing too after my first step of the surgery. My rectum was severely infected with UC and i was bleeding everyday aswell with my ostomy bag on!! It wasn't until my second surgery when the j pouch was created everything was normal again. hang in there.
