I'm 7 weeks post surgery I. For the most part I feel pretty good most of the time. But sometimes I feel a little naucious with some cramping or soreness near wound site. I also developed a hernia on the left side, something I guess is somewhat common.
My doc says he'll fix it on next surgery. He also says I'm good to go on all activities. But sometimes I feel under the weather and sort of fragile, is this normal?

Hi Eric,
I'd say feeling fragile is normal for quite a while, but if you feel dizzy, nauseous, weak and fluey with a fever of any kind, even low-grade, I'd advise you to contact your doc to make sure you don't have an infection brewing somewhere. If you can't look back on the past week and see an improvement in your strength, stamina and general well-being, I'd get yourself checked. My surgeon kept telling me I was fine despite me having a low-grade fever and blood tests showing my electrolytes were all over the place. Sometimes surgeons seem to only look at the wound, not at the person around it. It's often hard to judge progress on a day to day basis, so week by week can be easier. Are you losing weight? Having headaches? dehydration is always something to watch for - don't drink water, but drink anything that gives you salts and sugars - and not alcohol until you feel stronger. Good luck!

Hi, Eric!

Does being like being hit by a MAC truck bring images to mind???? Yes, it is normal to feel all kinds of things for quite some time! It must have taken me a full year to feel ALMOST normal! Surgeons know what they know from book learning. We know what we know from having lived the experience! I have to laugh at some of the things my surgeon said "early on"! He meant well. He had NO experience with the REAL THING!!!!! I still "love him".
