Hello - I have been having upper right quadrant pain for a few days.It hurts under my right rib and sometimes my back on the same side. Went in today to have a CT scan done. The DRs. office (family doctor) just called and said everything looks ok from the radioligist report - and she read off the list of organs - liver, spleen, etc. When she got through i said what about my gallbladder?? Thats what we were testing for. She asked if i still had it? As far as i know - I do. They don't usually remove it during our j pouch surgery - do they?? I remember awhile ago that someone said they removed the appendix. I have a call into my surgeons office in Chicago. Any thoughts on what else this might be? Thanks for your help. I had a one step j pouch in 2000 and have done very well. I am not on any meds at this time. Mary

Even if you had your gallbladder removed, they should have reported on the condition of your bile ducts. But, in any event, they do not remove the gallbladder during j-pouch surgery, unless there is some compelling need. And if they did, you should have been told.
The CT report should mention the state of the gallbladder (contracted, distended, etc.) and if there are any stones or sludge present. Also, if there are any dilated bile ducts or calcification present, it should be mentioned. I could understand overlooking it if you were complaining of pelvic pain, but when the history is specifically right upper quadrant pain, they should describe the gallbladder. You need a report from a doctor actually looking at the films, not a dictated report. You may want to ask your surgeon to take a look at it.

I know that when they did the CT on my gallbladder they didn't see anything wrong with it so then they did a ultrasound which showed a little bit of a thickening wall but it wasn't definitive...Then they gave me a HIDA scan that showed the radioactive stuff not making it past my gallbladder, hence I was Dx'ed with Bialary sludge..Sounds gross.. Tried to have my surgery done lapro and they couldn't do it due to adhesions so open they went...The scar for my GB surgery is almost as long as my midline scar from pouch surgery.... Not a fun recovery... Julie

Hello - just returned home after a 5 day stay in the hospital. I left my gallbladder with them. Had all kinds of tests trying to rule things out. The Hida scan machine was broken until Monday. They did a EGD which showed i have the beginning stage of Barretts disease. For that - i have to take a Prilosec every day and be rescoped in a year. I really hadn't had any trouble with Gerd or Reflux..... When they did the Hida scan - it showed my gallbladder wasn't functioning properly. They scheduled surgery for Tuesday morning. They were able to do it laproscopically - but he had been prepared to open me up with my past history of the j-pouch. The pictures he took were amazing - i hope to be able to post them later today. The scar tissue had attached itself to my stomach and then up to my gallbladder. The picture looks very strange.The stomach is just hanging at a weird angle. He clipped all the scar tissue and the stomach went back down into place.Feeling great now - just on a couple of pain meds. I had been having twinges for awhile and maybe that was the reason? There was alot of scar tissue around my previous scar and he clipped all of it too. Anyways, very thankful that was all it was and very glad to be home. My husband is the best and i am being treated like a princess. Recovery time should be quick and they said i can go back to work in a week or so. Thanks for answering my previous questions. Mary
