When you develop a new symptom out of the blue after years of good function, you need to call your doctor. This can be anything from cuffitis (likely) to a bleeding stomach or duodenal ulcer. You need to be examined and have some blood work done.

Do you know if you have any strictures? I have an anal stricture, so my doc says not to worry if there some blood in my stool. Are you cramping? One good thing is at least you are still emptying your pouch, so it's not a complete obstruction. I had a problem similar to yours about a month ago, and they did an abdominal CT scan and found nothing. I was bloated and in pain. What I had to do was take chlordiazepam/clindinium caps, and had to lie down and wait for the cramps to subside (and to pass stools).
One pattern I've discovered is that my body reacts negatively to stress AFTER the stress has passed, as if now it's time to relax, defenses are down, and WHAM! I get hit with something similar to what you're experiencing. I don't know if I've helped, but I wish you the best, and hope you figure it out. In my opinion, bleeding that is more than fleeting, is a serious symptom and if the pouch scope is clean, then they need to look further. Maybe an upper GI series, upper endoscopy, or even camera pill endoscopy. Bleeding is never caused by IBS. If there is a stricture, yes there can be bleeding. But bleeding for 3-4 weeks is pretty serious and I would not accept "your pouch looks fine so you are fine" approach. There is a whole lot more to your gut than your pouch.
One thing I failed to ask is if you have been taking any NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, naprosyn, aspirin, or similar drugs? If so, you need to stop them immediately, as they can be the cause. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

I agree with Jan. I should have been more careful. I didn't mean to suggest that IBS caused bleeding. I just know that my stricture does. (I also had bleeding ulcers in my stomach from NSAIDs, so stop them right away if you're taking them -- they work as blood thinners.)
