I took a B-12 supplement two days ago and found the pill in my stool this morning...this has never happened before and it is a bit concerning...does that mean I'm not absorbing my pills anymore?...has anyone had this happen?

This has happened to me before, and it can mean two things. If the capsule that you passed is whole and unopened then clearly no, you are not absorbing it. If it is just the outer capsule, then you probably did absorb it. It can depend on what its made out of. Sometimes the medicine is inside a coating that is hard to digest, or it is bound together by its ingredients and pressed. The outer capsule can be passed with no problem, thats even normal with some medicines, like time released capsules.

Is the pill you passed whole, and do you know what its coated in?

Chesea...it is a time released tablet and it passed whole...I have taken this for a while and this has never happened before...maybe it depends on when I take it...I didn't take it with food this time...

I was always told that folks with J- or K-pouches should NOT take time-released pills.

ya you can take but I have had to open capules before thats the only way you can take I had to do this with my pain meds before. I had to eat the powder with apple sauce so it did't taste so bitter

I agree that us folks with a highly modified digestive system will likely not benefit from time-released capsules/tablets.

You have a couple of options.

1) Continue to take your supplement with food and see if you can continue your former successful absorption.
2) Get a B-12 tablet, crush it or chew it and then wash it down. I chew my daily multi and wash it down for easier, and hopefully better, absorption.
3) Take a liquid B-12 supplement.
4) Take a sub-lingual or lozenge B-12 supplement. I take a sub-lingual methyl form of B-12. It's great.
5) Ask your doctor about a intra-nasal form of B-12. I think you need a prescription for it.
6) B-12 shot that must be prescribed by a doctor. However, I do think that you will only get one of these if you are severely B-12 deficient. I could be wrong though.

thanks for the suggestions...I didn't know they had liquid b-12...I think however I may need the shots...I will talk with my doctor...this has never happened to me before...wonder if it's due to my recent gallbladder surgery which appears to be changing my digestive absorbtion...
