I had a partial obstruction on Sunday, and I'm pretty sure it's mostly gone. Now I'm starving and need all my energy to walk (slowly) for three minutes!!! Is it normal to be really weak after a very painful obstruction?

Hi Patrice,

Yes , I find it absolutely floors me. Rehydration fluid helps me and also a few reasonable meals but it may be a few days before you feel normal. Good luck and take it easy. Annemarie

thanks Annemarie. It's been about six days and I'm still pretty much in bed all day. I go on little walks but my lower back/side hurts almost immediately after I start. I'm starting to feel kinda hopeless. Heating pads, drinking and tylenol help for a while, but that doesn't mean I can go anywhere. I think I just need a wheelchair or something.

Patrice,
Obstructions are very hard on the body sometimes. In April, I had my pouch removed and a perm. ileo placed, which was my most difficult surgery yet. But a few days after I got home, I had an obstruction that lasted about 1 week. I felt so much worse after the obstruction than the surgery! Just take it day by day, keep making baby steps and keep moving forward. Each day you have to try and get stronger, even though it can be really hard. Naps are just as important as pushing yourself to walk.
Nap, Drink, Eat and Walk, and take care of yourself!

A lot of folks think that once they have gotten "past" an obstruction that things will be fine..They will be but you should expect pain and tiredness to follow. If you feel really tired..To the point where you just can't get up and function(you mention a wheelchair) then I would be a little bit concerned..It could be just dehydration and your body trying to recover from nurses waking you up every 4 hrs. As everyone knows the hospital is an exhausting place!
Give yourself another week but do start walking.
The walking should help your energy levels..
