I'm on my 2nd temp ileostomy due to a problem whilst I had some more surgery for a build up of scar tissue.

Over the last week I have been needing to pass mucous almost every half hour, day & night!

This is severely affecting my sleep & also my normal working day.

Any ideas guys or is it still within the norm for a pouch?

Thanks for your help

Ben.

Ben, I sympathise, i had constant mucous leakage during my 3 months with the loop ileo. It was soul destoying,,no control over it,,swabs stuck in bum cheeks almost all the time and sanitary pads too.
But all thsi changed overnight with takedown.I now do leak sometimes but thats mainly because i am learning to interpret my bodily signals when the pouch needs emtying. I am 2.5 weeks post takedown and its geting better all the time.No more wet bum.
Dont worry,,it ll be all diferent after takedown. There are threads on did subject , use the FIND facility and type in mucous.

Was also a bit worried as I jumped from passing mucous twice a day to passing every half hour day and night.

Any reason for this?

I am not sure if this is good or bad sign actually. I remeber at the beginning in the first weeks post surgery my intestines took awhile to wake up ,,stoma output was wattery no matter what i ate and mucous wasnt a bother so much .I was only worried then becaous it was bloody sometimes.
Few weeks down the line the stoma looked healthier,,bigger, more red in colour and working better, output more solid.Alongside of this the mucous production increased.I could see it coming out of the stoma , especialy in the morning when i would change the appliance.
I reasoned as mucous was anatural product of the intestinal tissue to facilitate absorbtion and smooth passing of food that it was a good sign, things were working well.
If you feel well, your stoma is working ok, you dont feel unduly dehydrated then i wouldnt worry too much unless you feel pain in your pouch inside or you r bleeding as well.
How much do you leak?..i had episodes of drenching the sanitary towels..but usually it was just a wet swab between my bum cheeks chnaged almost hourly or more.

Thanks again.

Its always difficult to tell but I guess its usually about a tablespoon full each time. As I say this is about every 45 mins day and night.

The stoma is working well, but I do have a 'pulling' sensation in my backpassage at the time which then becomes a dull ache.

I will certainly try the wet swab trick, as I'm travelling to Krakow in Poland next weekend.

Thanks

Ben.

Ben, I had the same pulling sensation in my pouch and dull ache,,i think it was because when the stoma was working the whole of the intestines were contracting , even the "decommisioned " part.
Krakow you say,,I was born in Poland and came to live in in the UK when i was 18 and went to uni here.,,When in Krakow dont forget to visit magnificent salt mine with all salt chandelliers and sculptures..I think its unique in the world. Its in Wieliczka. Also , if you have tiem try to get to Zakopane in high Tatras ,,you wont regret it!
Have a good holidaySmiler

Thanks. Looks like I'll be taking a few packs of toilet roll with me Wink

Looking forward to the trip, we are planning to visit the salt mines, so pleased to hear they are that good.

We're also going to pack our thermals!!

Thanks

Ben.

I had mucous output once every 2 days or so while waiting for takedown, and never tried this, but what about immodium? Does it help with slowing down mucous output?
