my husband is getting weak, bleeding in his bowel movments, lots of gas pain and pain near his anus. he avoids going to the ER because the docs are often unfamiliar with j pouches, colitis, etc. but he obviously needs to get checked out. this has been getting worse over the course of a week and his regular doctor is a disappointment.
anybody in the new york area that can recommend a specific hospital or clinic? any good resources online? i dont' know what to look for. we are in Brooklyn, but can travel for good treatment. the emergency rooms in our area run the gamut from insane to incompetent. backgroung: he has a j pouch... operation 8 years ago. he gets pouchitis from time to time, and self-medicates with FloraQ and Cipro. but he just knows this is something else. an ulcer? freaked-out partner, jenny |

Right over in NJ you can go to Robert Wood University Hospital which has a Chrons and Colitis clinic. If you can't wait the 6 weeks for an appointment you can just go in through the ER. Robert Wood is right in New Brunswick, NJ.

My husband had his jpouch surgery at NYU Medical Center on First Avenue. His surgeon is Dr. Kenneth Eng. Overall, we have been pleased with NYU. I know that Mt. Sinai is well known for gastro specialists, as well.
Good luck. |

Cornell Medical-Dr. Ellen Scherl. Her speciality is hard to crack cases and j-pouches. The only downfall is that she does not take insurance but she just took on 2 doctors so maybe one of them takes insurance. BTW she comes out of Dr. Present's office. Email me if you would like her phone number. I know a lot of people on this board use her.

Mt Sinai seems to be the most popular hospital in NYC for IBD related GI and Surigical Care. Here is a link to the IBD center.
http://www.mountsinai.org/msh/msh_frame.jsp?url=clinica...ces/ibd_services.htm My suggestion would be to make a consultation appointment with a GI or Surgeon. PM me if you want a list of docs who I recommend. Of coarse, other hospitals such as Cornell and NYU, and local hospitals also have some great doctors too. |

Hi
If insurance is an issue, (and you want superlative service) try NJ. I was living in the Gramercy Park area. I was extremely disappointed in my NY Dr (his 3 suregries are a MAJOR reason I have an ostomy now after J Pouch and the Horrible service at Mt Sinai-nurses never came, gave you grief about accidents, etc (maybe they are short-handed...). Morristown Hospital in NJ was Well worth the drive for my family-caring courteous nurses make it almost a spa/hotel stay and the physicians are excellent. If you opt for this route-try Dr Rolandelli-Chief of surgery-(973-971-7200) does J/K pouchs and ostomys. Has repaired NY/Sinai docs work too. Kind, considerate and talented, not arrogant like my past surgeon Takes insurance-I only paid 2k to the anesthesiologist this past June. Wish I had seen him first. |
