Hi there!

My sister Jacki had her second surgery in Dec. She went to the hospital last night because she was in terrible pain. She's still there. Now she's having fowl smelling, dark red blood. It sounds like she is having pain when she's going to the bathroom. Is this pouchitis? I guess they did xrays to make sure she doesn't have a blockage. Has this ever happened to any of you?

Blood is usually an indication of cuffitis, not pouchitis. I'm wondering if maybe she had an abscess that burst. That could have caused the pain and the blood.

Initially, on reading your post, I was thinking blockage. Is she able to go to the bathroom? Is she producing anything?

Let us know how she's doing.

I spoke to your sister in chat last night and I'm so glad she went to the hospital. Please let her know I am thinking about her, and please come back with an update.

Dark red/blackish foul smelling blood usually indicates a bleed further up in the digestive system, possibly the stomach. The reason it is so smelly is because it has been partially digested. I hope that they find what's causing the bleed soon.

Please let Jacki know we are thinking of her and update as soon as you know what's happening.

Take care Smiler

Within 6 months after takedown I had similar symptoms. It started out with gradually increasing pain until it was unbearable. By the time it was unbearable I was in the ER waiting room. When I was finally seen and my surgeon had arrived, I couldn't stand to have anyone touch my abdomen. Even moving slightly caused the most excruciating pain. I think my surgeon ordered a CT scan and it showed my small intesting had kinked causing a blockage of sorts. They admitted me after putting me on heavy pain meds. The pain meds kept me sane. My surgeon debated for days about opening me up. He held off. Meanwhile, I continued to pass the darkest blood. I was on IVs, nothing by mouth and then had an NG tube inserted. Continued to pass darkish, deep red blood. I never smelled it but I don't have a good "smeller". The nurses, however, said it made them sick to their stomach! After five days things eased up and my intestine must have unkinked all by itself! No surgery. Solids gradually introduced and pain left. I went home and feel so grateful not to have had any additional surgery and to never have an episode like this again....four years later! Best wishes to your sister.

Hi there!

Thank you all for responding. Jacki's feeling much better. She's not passing anymore blood. They couldn't find out where it's coming from, which is very frustrating. They started her on solid foods & she may be going home today! Thank you for your thoughts & prayers!
