hello, i had uc and had j pouch surgery about 3wks ago, have a temp illostomy now, my question is i am having severe rectal spasms, the spasams come about every 2 to 3 seconds and it is constant all day long, its so unberable the pain is almost worse than when i had uc. i tried taking the pain meds that i was perscribed when i was released from the hospital on. my take down isn't scheduled untill january, and i don't know if i can take this for 3 months. i tried pain meds, enemas and sitting in hot water, heating pads ect, still cant get rid of the pain. please any information on what to do to relieve the pain would be appreciated,

Talk to your surgeon. I know other people on the board have been prescribed some meds to help with the spasms. Some of this is to be expected after having major surgery like this. Are you experiencing pain or just uncomfortable pressure? Maybe you need to increase your pain meds? I am sorry you are experiencing this, but know that the next few months it is very common to experience a multitude of uncomfortable symptoms (in particular after takedown) as your body is adjusting to this. I had a terrible time my first few months with many varying symptoms and understand your discomfort. Your surgeon should be able to prescribe something to calm down the spasms.

Hi Ross, When I had my surgery (back in 1984) I would get rectal spasms quite often even though I had a bag. I was able to stop them by going to the toilet and pass "stool" through the anus / rectum as a normal person without the bag. Perhaps some body waste is finding its way down there. In terms of stopping the spasms, you can use two types of creams: 1) Nitro based solution (mixed with petrolium jelly) - side effects are headaches 2) Nefedepine based solution (mixed with petrolium jelly) - my preferred solution I have had excellent results with nefedepine - your surgeon / GI should know about it. Best of Luck! Solomin

Hi Ross, I had the same problem since the jpouch surgery when I still had the temp ileo as well. Even after the takedown, things actually got worse. It has been 2.5 years now and unfortunately I am going back for a permanent end ileo. The only way I can stop the pain is by using Belladonna and Opium (B&O) suppositories. You should give it a try. Good luck!

My spasms pain often lasts about five minutes..at that time I'm rendered to a cringing jello piece praying it won't last long it's painful, but it's common, I don't know why..your not alone

I second the belladonna/opium suppositories. Hard to get, but they are the only thing that helped.
