I took 16.2 mg of belladonna alkaloid phenobarbital 4 times a day on monday for the first time like my doc instructed. That night, I got a really bad stomachache. I haven't taken the pills since, but STILL have the stomachache. Could it just be a coincidence, or could the med have harmed anything? It's a kind of like....a twisting feeling all over the whole abdomen. There is no blood or anything else abnormal, just the stomachache. I also had a bit of nausea in the first few hours, but that subsided.

Not likely, but you may have just reacted badly to it. The belladonna is actually supposed to relax the gut muscles.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Chelsea,

I used Belladonna for spasms and did not have any stomach issues, I just felt out of it. Like Jan said, you likely reacted badly to it. Let your Dr know, he should be able to change you to a different med.

Belladonna alkaloids, like Atropine, Scopolamine and Glycopyrolate are primarily used for decreasing secretions, relaxing the gut or preventing slowing of the heart rate. Phenobarbitol is a barbiturate and very different from belladonna alkaloids; it is usually used to treat epilepsy. What wre you prescribed your medication for?

Rani- Oh trust me, I know how ridiculous that med sounds. Long story short, my doc thinks I have crazy anxiety problems so he keeps giving me sedatives. Even though he is a gastrointerologist, NOT a psychiatrist. Confused

Chelsea,
He shouldn't be treating anxiety with Phenobarbital, there are much better medications--- Do ask him why this choice of medication? I am sure it also makes you quite sleepy.
