Hi all, I'm currently waiting for a surgical appointment to get a fistula plug inserted. Over the past couple of days I've been experiencing a higher discharge than ever before from the fistula. I'm not exactly sure if it's a recto or ano vaginal fistula, but regardless, it's nasty. Also I have a feeling that another abcess has appeared in that general area, all is swollen and tender. Last summer I had a bad abcess and ended up in hospital for 4 days getting IV antibiotics. I'm currently taking cipro 500mg twice daily. I know that with the abcess I need to be vigilant with sitz baths and I also have cortifoam enemas I can use. Any other suggestions to get his abcess shrunk down again? I'm leaving on Sunday for a ski holiday for the school break and don't want to mess up this family trip, please help!!!!

My guess is that you need another or different antibiotic. While antibiotics do not treat abscesses directly (only drainage does that), the antibiotics can help keep it contained. Sounds like the Cipro has lost its punch.

Ok, so just back from my family Dr. He has referred me to a local surgeon to look at the abcess. This local guy has called back and says he doesn't want to touch me, wants to go see the specialist that did my surgeries......meanwhile, the specialists office has called to schedule the fistula plug placement for March 20. They're trying to get me into see someone at Mt Sinai Toronto tomorrow....will it ever stop?????????

I was able to get into my surgeon's office today, the appointment was this morning at 830am. We had a terrible snowstorm and my sister and I left home at 530am and got to the hospital only about 5 min late for the appointment. Upon being examined, they found that the abcess had burst, so no need to drain it for now. I've been sent home with cipro and flagyl and told to take sitz baths at least 3 times per day to keep the area clean and soothe it. If I feel it's not getting any better by Friday I'm to go back and get it drained. They thought they may either place a seton drain or do the string thing. If it's not cleared up by the 20th, then the fistula plug placement will have to be delayed............merry go round? seems more like a roller coaster to me!
