Still new to stoma and bag world, has first surgery Feb. 20. The stoma nurse supplied me with coloplast "assura" one bag type with velcro closing. But the bag often fills like a balloon with gas. I have read about some types of bags with filters that reduce gas buildup, anyone have one to reccomend?

I use coloplast assura adhesive coupling two piece bags. I think they're great because they have a filter that lets out air but its activated carbon so it doesn't stink. Also with the two piece I can put on a larger bag for at night or for long car trips so I don't have to worry about emptying it as often and small bags for if I want to go and hang out have it not show as much. And I don't have to change the wafer each time. You can call Coloplast and get samples to try out for free. I do it all the time still just for paste and once in a while I'll try something new. I think you can get samples off their website too.

Hi Eric,

I too like the Coloplast Assura adhesive coupling bags but I do change mine every morning after my shower so not sure how well they'd be effective if I had to use them for longer.

You might want to call around a few of the other manufacturers for some samples. I believe that JasonPA test drove Hollister's new filtered bags with great success so that might be a good place to start.

The gas problem does get better in time as your body gets used to the new plumbing. You could also try eating eating live yoghurt or taking probiotics to help keep your gut from producing too much gas.

Good luck. Smiler
