Hello Everyone
What a weekend. I have searched the site about constant urge to go. But no real cures mentioned. I had a anal tear two weeks ago and it has healed. THis weekend I have had the urge to go most of last night and tonight. I saw my surgeon Friday and he says it part of the healing. I am frustrated!! How have you stopped or subside the urge to go? I do have a type of gas (I think because my ppouch is not empty). Could I have a problem because I eat to much rice, potatoes, tapiccoa pudding and Immundium? I need solutions it been diffcult to work and it looks like I won't be going to work today. Iam about 20 weeks after second sugery J pouch. I want to make plans -- last week we bought tickets to see the San Diego Chargers Play -- We could NOT go because I had too many bowel movements!! UGH!! Thank you all!! Helen |

Helen, I really only get that constant "urge" when I have pouchitis, that said, I take oxycodone 5mg twice a day and it gives me relief. Whether you wish to mess with narcotics is another story. But it was the only thing that gave me relief. Don't discount the addiction factor when you consider.Although when I really thought about it, if I had thyroid disease or diabetes and always HAD to take my medicine....is it that much different? Just a ponder....Hope you feel better soon.

I agree. When I get pouchitits I have to go, literally about 50 times a day. Call your doc and check it out. Maybe you can get on some meds that will help.

I found that if my stools are too thick, I cannot empty easily and I feel like there is something there all the time (because there is). Pouches empty by gravity for the most part. I aim for a stool consistency that is just formed enough not to burn. Of course, when it is early in the adaptation period, that is difficult to accomplish because the transit time is pretty quick and you may have a lot of bile acids that are unconverted.
Being about 5 months after take down, you should be making good progress by now, but some take up to a year for full adaptation. Pouchitis is definitely a possibility and bacterial overgrowth also can be the issue. A short course of antibiotics could easily sort this out and settle that question. I agree that a call to the doctor is in order. Ask specifically for a short course of Flagyl or Cipro (10 days) to rule out pouchitis or bacterial overgrowth. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Thank You everyone,
Ihad consultation with th surgeon on Friday and he feels it natural. He wrote me RX for Vicodon for the pain but not for the symtoms that is why I am frustrated I keep asking for Cipro he looks at me like I lost my mind. He gave me one week of Cipro between xmas and New years and I thought I turned a large corner it was wonderful. But now he thinks it is normal so no more Cipro. I was not happy when I left Friday. I am not at work because I was up all night with the urge Now it is fine so I can be normal. It will come on later today. Please share your thoughts... Helen |

Ah, if it was pouchitis, you would have symptoms all day long (and all night long). This sounds more functional, as symptoms appear as the day wears on and your food makes its way into your pouch.
May be time to do an elimination diet. Start with clear liquids for a day, then add one food at a time. Keep a diary to see if you can see a pattern of diet and symptoms. This could be part of adaptation. You may want to consider taking probiotics, in case this is related to the gut flora. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |
