Are you using anything protectant on your bottom like Ilex or Calmoseptine? I assume you're soaking in the tub after each bm when you are home already.

Calmoseptine is OK, but Ilex is the champ. It got me out of the taco butt (butt burn, anal volcano, etc) cycle.

Not sure what you mean by "normal" but if you mean pre-colitis, pre-surgical, that is likely never to happen. If you mean just no "anal volcano" or BB (hilarious Big D!) then it takes a while. Everyone is different.
What foods constitute "bland"? Maybe you should actually introduce some new foods.

It took me almost a year to stop with the butt-burn and itch. (I only get it on occasion now and is very manageable.) It does get better over time, but it did take me almost a year to finally get to a point where I wasn't experiencing it on a weekly basis. You should notice that it gets less and less frequent.
Hang in there > and get some products like A&D, Calmo, iLEX if you haven't already. 5 minute warm tub soaks are great too. Puts out the fire - literally. Smiler

The BB does take a while to subside. I still get it occasionally but at least now I know what foods cause it and I know when to 'look forward to it'.

If you are eating a bland diet and still suffering really bad, try elimating things. Orange juice and other juices can be very irritating, as can tomato sauce and some dairy.

You'll just have to get some good cream and play with the foods that you are eating. It may not seem like it but things will get better.

I am sure you got a list of foods that good and not so good but here are some links to check out:

Taco Butt - aka Butt Burn. Same thing. And yes, it does burn inside - not just out. In fact I think that is more common than skin burn on the outside.

The problem has indeed gotten less frequent for me as well - but continually rears its head still the same. I am 6 months out. And of course, every time I go to my doctor I'm doing well and there's nothing to see. Then the next day... ouch. Like my butt is always ready to tell the doc, "Nothing to see here. Everything's fine." Drives me crazy.

I think that's how I was @ 11weeks then it dropped drastically to 3-4 a day somewhere between 12-14 week post takedown. Pound on the yogurt (activia) and banana 2x/day. If you can tolerate (Straus) Organic yogurt even better.

I did sitzbath every after BM when I was home. I used a prescription ointment which I can't remember anymore but it is for fungal and anti-inflamation all in one tube. Apply this on a clean and dry butt of yours then seal it with calmoseptine.

I usually get butt burn if I have a lot sugary food and drinks. I really don't indulge in them often but I don't eat spicy food so I really can only attribute it to that.

Desitin helps when I first feel the burn. It's best to soothe it before it gets worse.

As for normal bms, over time mine have become less acidic and thicker- more like putty but some days are better than others. For some people 8 times a day is normal. It takes a while to adjust- I was told to give it a year.
If I know I am going to have a long day I will take 2 imodium in the morning and it seems to hold me over. I usually go 4 times a day average, but I really think about it.

Good luck!

TACO BUTT!!! I love that!

When I've had butt burn, I have a bit of a pattern I follow:

- hot soak in the tub with some baking soda (the yellow box stuff)

- PAT dry...do not rub

- allow to air for a minute or two (or for however long you can stand to be naked Wink )

- slather on the Calmoseptine

I also avoid spicy foods 99% of the time

I have also noticed that I don't get "taco butt" nearly as often since I've been taking a probiotic.

I just wanted to add, that one of the things that I have found is to make sure I drink enough water everyday. I know when I have issues it seems to happen if I have not drank enough water.
And like some else said, try to stay away from the sugary drinks, spicy foods most of the time and look for foods that trigger your pouch to dump (for me it is shrimp and ham-but I do still indulge occassionally).
And for sure yogurt with live culture in it is huge, unless you can take swallowing a lot of probiotic pills, if dairy does'nt agree with you.

I am almost 30 years out from my pouch surgery (I have an S-pouch not a j-pouch) and it is just like anything you need to just watch your diet and see what works best for you. all of our bodies are going to react differently to different things.
