Hi all Im new to this site, I have an S pouch but its same as a J pouch just bigger.
I had my first surgery in 12/2005 and 2nd (takedown) surgery 2/27/2006. doing real well all things considered. Last summer I started running. I am now training for my first ever marathon this june. On long runs, (usually 18 - 20 miles, which I have done a number of times) I usually get some gas pain starting in the pouch area. Sometimes its not too bad but sometimes it gets excruciating. It slows me down to a snails pace. It hurts bad and I cant seem to pass any gas. I have had to stop runs short because of it. I take a probiotic everyday & before running I try to squeeze everything I can out. Does anybody have any help or suggestions? anyone else taken up distance running after recovery from surgery? Thanks |

Looks like no long distance runners here. Just wanted to welcome you. Do you think that you may be swallowing a lot of air when you run? Dont know much about running so that may sound like a dumb ques. Anyway, welcome and maybe someone will come along and offer some advice.

There are other runners here. Send them a PM. Do a Find on 'marathon.' Maybe they will have some good feedback for you.

I am long distance runner. I run in the morning which is when my pouch is emtiest. I don't take probiotics because I found them to cause gas so you may want to experimetn with stopping that. I also like my output to be really thin not pastey because I think it is harder to empty so I drink grape juice, sometimes take some magnesium, avoid too many carbs (I also have a bit of a stricture that I need dialated now and then so that is another reason I avoid thickening foods). Are you drinking sports drinks? They bother some and contain a lot of sugar--especially the ones make with powder. You may want to try eliminating or cutting them with water. can you have a bathroom break on your long runs (I live in a big city so it is always possible when I run).? Emptying your pouch again may help. Good luck! I hope you figure out the problem. There is nothing like running!
