My father passed away from Fap so my sister and i got screened for it both of us carried the gene, but i was much to young to know anything about this because i was 10 at the time.
My sister had a collectomy done and had an ileostomy and now shes fine.

I recently got my operation done on the 25th of October this year at Sick kids hospital in Toronto and i had very good surgeons doing it and they were confident in the way my operation was going so i had a 1 step operation and woke up with the j pouch i was very happy to know i didnt have to worry about a bag.

My recovery in the hospital went amazing and i was out after a week and soon i was feeling better and better. But this all changed last week( november 21/07) i had to rush to the washroom at night and this time my stool was much different it was very acidic and burned my skin, i placed medicated cream around my bum to avoid burning but i had the acid around a day and a half and could not sleep. Once it had ended i was SO RELIEVED i mean acidic burning was god awful and i had no pain or any problems from the surgery until that night.
A few days passed and i found myself with the acidic stools once again at night , i was beginning to get less enthusiastic and frustrated. Then last night i woke up and to my delight my dear acidic stool had returned and this time after a while i found some blood (not much and only when i wiped ).
Nervously i fought out the rest of the night and called my nurse at the hospital and surgeon unfortunately my surgeon is out of the country for a week or two and next time he ll be available is for my post operation check up with him and the nurse hasn't got back to me yet, so frightened i turned to Google and found this site =)

Basically i have a few things to ask-
Is diarrhea/acid liquid stools common or normal and should i be worried? Any medications other then imodium i could use to help with this?

I have stayed away from a lot of foods since its my first month of recovery basically i try to have things such as breads rice and other things that my doctor recommended , Should i be having a lot of fibre and whole wheat things?

I try to have smaller portioned meals more frequently and avoid having larger meals to late in the day? Is this something i should be doing

Basically i'm a little frightened anxious and unhappy with the pain i get from the acidy stools so im trying to find things to change.
Please dont mind the spelling mistakes and poor grammar i am currently going through one of the acid stool sessions so i couldnt really concentrate all that well .
Thank you

It is not uncommon to have what is referred to on this site as "butt burn". Often it is caused by types of food we eat, for me, anything with tomato sauce in it. Food is kind of a trial and error at this point. Can you pinpoint what you ate on the days you had the burn? If so, that might be the cause. A lot of folks here do use medicated ointments, myself included. I use the ILEX which is advertised at the top of this page. You may sometimes have a touch of blood on the toilet paper which might be anal irritation or possibly hemmorhoids.

What you are going thru is similar to what most of us who just had takedown are having. Don't be frustrated yet...keep a food diary and see if you can tell what is causing the burn.

Good Luck!!

Damian, the burning is pretty normal in the beginning. Watch what you drink too, anything that has sugar in it will make things go thru you faster and also cause burning. Stick to water, unsweetened iced tea or hot tea. If you need to drink gatorade, be sure to water it down. Try to keep things soft and bland for a little while and add one new food at a time, so you can see how it reacts. If something bothers you now, just wait a while and try it again. Try adding pasta, rice, potatoes, bagels, peanut butter and ground lean meat to your diet, they will help to firm things up and slow them down. It takes a little while for the pouch to adjust. I use calmoseptine, which is a great barrier cream. Hope things settle down soon,

janna

Oatmeal and bananas are a real comfort food for me when I'm experiencing butt burn. Sometimes I eat it several times a day. It is soothing and filling. I drink water during the day or hot tea. Tea seems to soothe, as well. Best wishes.
