I am having some serious problems. Last night I was in and out of the bathroom. Normally I am very loose I felt like I had something up there and could barely go there was alittle loose stool coming out then I pushed alittle bit and something came out there was tons of blood and it was hanging out of me. My fiance' said it looked like an intestine. So I was rushed to the er and they said my rectum prolasped after a while it went back up. But, I am feeling like I have to go its hard to go again and theres very little coming out. I am really scared. The doctors told me If it comes out again I need to be rushed to the er and have emergency surgery. I am very scared about my pouch. I don't want anything to happen to it. Has anyone ever had this problem. If so did you have to have surgery? Did you loose your pouch? It would be great if I could get some advice thanks.

Wow - I wish you the best of luck!

I dont have any experience with this. I am curious why the doctors were so quick to release you from the hospital? I would think that more monitoring is in store?

I would call your surgeon ASAP tomorrow morning and stress to the receptionist/nurse what happened so that you get a quick call back. Or what the heck, call him/her now and see about getting him/her paged.

Are the doctors that treated you over the weekend experts in the pouch? If not, make sure you get advice from your surgeon.

It is very unlikely that this will threaten your pouch, but if it keeps happening you will need corrective surgery (usually it is not an emergency- you just gently reinsert it- if you cannot reinsert it, then it could become an emergency). There are several here who developed pouch prolapse in varying degrees. I suggest that if it happens again, you make an appointment with your surgeon to discuss repair. This usually involves just some simple tacking of the pouch to the inside to keep it in place. You may just want to call your surgeon anyway before it happens again to discuss your options. There is no point in living in fear.

The real issue here is that you really should not strain as it can lead to prolapse, particularly early in the post operative period. However, sometimes it just happens through no fault of your own.

Thank you so much. The doctors I seen last night were er doctors. I was suprised to that they let me go home. He said I need to be kept a close eye on and if it happens again I need to be rushed back to the er. Tomorrow I am going to be talking to a colorectal surgeon. The surgeon who did my surgeries is now practicing in a different state. It really scared me though. I am afraid to go to the bathroom because I do have to push alot. And, I don't want to damage anything in there.

Well, if you are on any bowel slowers or thickeners, you may want to stop them for a while. Keeping your stool loose will make it easier to pass without straining. However, you also do not want pure liquid that causes irritation and straining from that. Find that balance.

When you are prone to prolapse, it can feel like an obstruction because as the bowel prolapses, it doubles up like a sleeve being turned inside out. This makes the opening that much smaller. You probably have been working on this prolapse for some time.

update:

Jan that's exactly how it felt when it came out. I'm stil not feeling well. I was having severe stomach pains the other night. I doubled up on my pain meds and that seemed to help. Saved me from going back to the ER. I seen a colorectal surgeon last Friday. She did a rectal exam and said there is definently evidence that I had a prolapse. This Friday I am having a test done she said its like a barium enema but a bit different. If it detemines my whole pouch is starting to colapse I will need another major surgery to go in there and tack the pouch back up in place. But, if it determines that my rectum is only prolapsing then she will have to go in surgicaly and rubber band my rectum back up. She said she was suprised this happened to me I guess its pretty rare. So, either way I will need surgery again. She said if it comes out again to lay down on my side and try pushing it back in. But, if it won't go in then I need surgery right away. It really gets frusterating at times. She told my mom she thinks this is a start to some problems. I just want to get this fixed before it starts coming out more. I pray to God that I won't ever loose my j-pouch. I guess that's my biggest fear. Thank you all for your help. This is the BEST SUPPORT GROUP!
