My husband was shot 5 times in the war...he now has a severe case of gastroparesis and they now believe that he has hypoglycemia. The two diets counter act each other and I am at a loss...I do not know what he is going through and he is in denial...if he doesn't admit it then it is not happening. Is there anyone out there who has any advice or knows anything about the two together? At this point I am looking at becoming a widow...it is scary for me...I can only imagine what it is like for him! He is a medically retired Marine and now he is a cop...tough guys don't complain! I never know when he is in pain and do not know when he is sick...unless he has a spell and shuts himself in the bathroom. He is unable to vomit...due to the injuries he incurred. I realize that no one other than God can fix this...but if you have any advice what so ever...please help me understand what is going on.
Thanks Tina Gage |

What sort of treatment is he on for the gastroparesis? Hypoglycemia is not a disease, but a symptom of something else and it is important to know what the underlying disorder is that is causing the hypoglycemia. Sometimes this cause can be serious if it is not related to drugs taken for diabetes. You treat the cause of the hypoglycemia. Here is a link that may be useful to you:

Thanks Jan,
He is on medication for the gastroparesis...however the doctors say he has an extremely severe case. There is nothing they can do for him...according to the doctors. The diet for a diabetic will kill him,he can't have anything high in fiber..no salt..everything I have been advised to do for one...I have been advised not to do for the other...so I am kinda at a loss. Thanks for the link. Tina Tina Gage |

Though not diabetic, I've just been diagnosed with gastric paresis. The GI at Mayo suggested Domperidone. Not available in US. Is supposed to increase stomach contractions. I have not tried this as yet, it hasn't arrived . But i have been using a homeopathic remedy called "Chinchona" or 'china" 3# pellets 3x/day X 3-5 days. You use it like you would any as needed med, if you feel better you stop, if symptoms return start again.
Another person said they were having slow but steady improvement with accupuncture treatments. This said, it sounds like our looking at a very serious case, check the posts a few days back- I was just diagnoed and Jan had some info about , well, the best I can descibe it was a stomach pacer, to stimulate the nerves.Chek back a few posts. Best of Luck. LoriP |

Hi there, all. This is Melissa, but I'm logged in as Temp Login because I can't seem to get in under my old account.
Anyhow, I had severe gastroparesis after my colectomy in 1997. After trying many ways to resolve it, I was eventually given a Hickman port in my chest and received IV erythromyacin, as it has the side effect of moving things along the GI tract. I received three doses a day at home (they taught my husband and I how to administer it). It worked and after a few months they were able to wean me off of it and things were resolved with no problems since. I don't know if that would work for your husband, though. Reglan, propulisid and other GI meds did nothing for me. LoriP: About the domperidone-- I'm on that now. It is a GI med that has a side effect of increasing breastmilk production in lactating women (I'm nursing my 13-month-old son and I've had low-supply issues). It's commonly recommended for that purpose (along with Reglan, but Reglan is known to cause depression and anxiety for long-term use). As you know, you can get it from a compounding pharmacy or order it from an overseas pharmacy (no Rx needed, but I'm not recommending self-diagnosing and self-prescribing), as it isn't available in the United States. I personally don't notice a GI effect at all, but then again, I'm not having GI problems. I'm gradually cutting down the dosage as my son gets older with the thought of being off of it entirely by the time he is ready to wean. I hope both of you find resolution soon. Best wishes to good health to all. |

Thanks for all the input...I have made notes of all of the suggestions and we are seeing another doctor this Friday. God Bless all of you and thanks again...knowing I am not alone and that someone cares enough to want to help...makes all the difference in the world!
