Has anyone had a problem when eating sesame seeds? I just ate a piece of tuna with sesame seeds all over it without thinking and now I am scared to death.

I got a serious blockage and so did my son. They expand. Start drinking hot green tea, maybe stop it before it starts, break it up.
I hope you don't have a problem. If it starts causing severe stomach pain use a heating pad, it will clear but will probably take all night. |

I have them all the time on sandwich bread and buns. I've had no problems.

I guess it depends on the individual. I eat them all the time and never have had any issues.

IP and Nicole 9,
DesiD still has an ostomy so it may be different than with a j pouch |

Don't freak out prematurely. You may find you tolerate them just fine. It is not a good idea to let anxiety overcome you. It can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I just ate some, they dont cause me any trouble at all....maybe if thats all you ate and a lot it might cause problems. When I had my ostomy they made my stoma look like a hamburger bun

Yeah, I had them as well on buns and bagels when I had my ostomy. I agree with Jan...dont freak out yet. I understand your concern though...I remember when I had my stoma and forgot I wasnt supposed to eat mushrooms...well, I remembered after eating nearly all of a grilled portabella sandwich! Luckily it all came out fine (mostly undigested, but fine)

I ate them with with my ostomy (which I had for 1 1/2 years) and now with my pouch with no issue.
I agree with Bill... in both situations they look mostly undigested! Hope you did fine with them, DesiD. -Nicole |

I am curious as to why we are told to avoid seeds.I thought it was because they can't fit through when they expand. I have avoided so many foods out of fear after a blockage from chinese veggies and a few other partials from grapes, raw carrots and mushrooms and popcorn.
How can it be so different for each of us? Even Chris with the k pouch cannot have seeds, they cause the catheter to get clogged. I look forward to any thoughts on this. |

I was never told to avoid seeds, nuts, popcorn or any other food. I have also never seen a sesame seed expand nor have I have had a partial blockage due to any of the above foods. However, everyone is different so try small amounts of your scary foods and see how they affect you. I have not found one food that I have to avoid.

I was told to avoid those foods you mentioned Holly for a certain amount of time. Once everything had healed with my ostomy and my pouch I was told to take things slow to see how my body reacted. I have been fine with all those foods ever since.

I think this is mostly an ostomy issue. I never had an ostomy and was not given any caution about seeds or any other food, other than to avoid milk and roughage for a few weeks post op. I think that giving too many restrictions without the rationale behind it just places unnecessary fears into us. They do not realize that some of us will follow those restrictions to the letter for life!!
To be honest, they are pretty silly if you ask me, since obstructions are rarely due to what you have eaten and are unavoidable. It makes you believe you have more control than you really do and if you do get obstructed, you think it is something you ate. Then you make yourself crazy trying to figure out what it was. Dr Dollar has such a nice ring to it!
You are right. I have had a life time scare instilled in me. I will try one new food this week to see how I do. thanks again. |

I used to eat a tablespoon of raw white sesame seeds every evening - with end and loop ileostomy and with a j-pouch. Never ever had a problem. I also was never told to avoid certain foods. I have had a couple of blockages that were food related. But it wasn't the food that was to blame, it was me. Eating a huge amount of raw carrots two days in a row and barely chewing them caused one of them. Eating a huge amount of dried apricots and barely chewing them caused another. I absolutely do not blame it on the food because it definitely was the eater's fault. And I don't avoid those foods because they caused a partial blockage. I just try to eat less than a truckload.
I eat every kind of nut, mushroom, every kind of Chinese vegetable, tons of popcorn, grapes, celery, asparagus, tremendously large salads made from every kind of lettuce (head and leaf) and I never have problems with any of them. I agree with Jan, we have nothing to fear but fear itself. I made that up all by myself. Well, okay, so I didn't. I would say I'm almost 100% positive that those sesame seeds won't cause any problems at all. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been.....
