OH MARK - THANK GODESS YOU ARE OKAY !!
You know Mark and David, I don't eat a special stoma diet. I ate really healthy foods when I had my j-pouch and just continue in the same vein. The only different thing is now I eat foods I could've only dreamed of before. Diary products, hamburger, spicey foods, tomatoes, oranges, etc. I didn't know there was a stoma diet. What is that and where did you hear of that? The only food I'm still not willing to take the risk on is corn. I had two severe blockages from eating corn on the cob, that I just won't go near that stuff anymore, and I LOVE it I'm six months into my perm ileo. My stoma works great and he's a tiny little 1-1/2" long and 3/4" diameter. I empty my bag about 6-10 times daily, depending on my intake. But the time varies wildly. Sometimes I go the whole entire morning without a trip to the potty. There is also a cool product out there that I use called ileo-sorb. Its a little bag of crystals that you drop into the bag/liner. They absorb tons of water and keep that splashy feeling from happening. I use them when I go to parties since there's more liquid intake and less food intake. Ask you ostomy nurse about a sample. It keeps your trips to the potty down. PS - Mark & Megan, thanks again for being such caring thoughtful friends when I was blue and giving me you hand to hold. I SOOOO VERY MUCH appreciated that. I'm 180 degrees better now. Peace - out - I've got to hit the pillow. Cat A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song. ~Chinese Proverb |

I really wasn't talking about a specific diet, just foods that don't sit well with my stoma or stomache. I too eat a lot of healthy stuff but would like to gain some weight back so eating some junk food as well.
Glad to see your doing better I will get some of that ileo-sorb stuff. David |

With both of the ileo's, I ate pretty much whatever I wanted. Didn't attempt corn, but the one food I had a major problem with (on more than one occasion) was mushrooms. I happen to LOVE portobellos and the darn things gave me an obstruction every time, no matter how much I chewed. Some people can tolerate them, but if you choose to try them, be careful. Now with the pouch, I'm gradually adding in things again. Can do some vegetables and fruits, but it's still pretty early on. Anyway, glad everything passed through on its own!

Mark--In the beginning it may be about the same; over time it probably will decrease--although every 3 hours is only 8 times/day, which is pretty common for a j-pouch. Thomas went 10-12 times/day in the beginning, gradually dropped to 6-8/day for some period of time. However at 6 years out, he now goes 7-9 times/day. I'm hoping that will drop once he's finished growing and hopefully eating less. The consistency varies greatly from "oatmeal" to small solids & liquid combined, and sometimes pure liquid. Sometimes diet or illness is the determining factor, and other times we have no idea what accounts for the watery consistency. So glad your obstruction passed. That's one little complication Thomas fortunately has never had. Thomas' Mom |
