I am posting for a friend whose 10 year old just had her 3rd/final surgery to connect the J-pouch. She has serious butt burn. I know they have several creams and just picked up a new prescription one tonight. I've been reading a bit on this site and was wondering if diet modification is also necessary. I was wondering what the concensus is about acid/alkaline balancing and if it helps the butt burn, etc. Unfortunately, they don't have time at the moment to log in here, so I am trying to help.

Thanks.

In the beginning while the pouch is adjusting, it's best to avoid sugar, especially in drinks. If she needs to drink gatorade, which is full of sugar, have her water it down. The best drinks would be water, hot or iced tea, both unsweetened. Artificial sweeteners cause frequency with some people, and that can cause burning too. I'm sure it's going to be hard for a 10 year old, but the less sugar in the beginning the better. Once the pouch adjusts, it's ok to start adding it back in the diet.

Also, tomato based sauces, and spicy foods will cause burning. In the beginning she should start with soft, bland foods and keep a food diary of how things react. If a food bothers her, stop it for a while, and reintroduce it again later.

I started with chicken, pasta, potatoes, rice, bagels, peanut butter, hamburgers from lean meat. These foods will help thicken things up and lower the frequency which can also help with the burning.

I also started probiotics 2 weeks after surgery, and that helped too. I took culturelle, but there are a number of them on the market that work well. I would check with her surgeon first.

I used calmoseptine, and it worked for me, but some other members use ilex, and also nupericanal. If you use the ilex, you need to put vasoline over it, because it becomes very sticky.

I hope this helps, and please let us know how she's doing. I can't even imagine how hard this is on a 10 year old. My prayers and thoughts are with her and the family.

I'm sure it would hard to cut out sugar for a 10 year old. Too much sugar kills me...bad BB. Orange juice is another one.

Have a fabulous day!

I have come to believe if the doctors look hard enough, they will find something wrong somewhere!

Tomato and spices give me BB. Bananas cure it for me.

The only thing that worked for my bb was getting a toto bidet and using it after EVERY bathroom trip, then using Pro Shield and/ or Nupercainal. A toto bidet is a toilet seat that goes on the regular toilet and it has a bidet feature. Until the toto arrived, I hopped in the shower as much as possible and took hot baths. Again, getting a 10 year old to do this stuff might be a challenge.

Order Ilex by clicking on the icon at the top of this page. It REALLY keeps moisture from touching a tender tush. Remember to put a coating of vaseline or other ointment over the top of it. Nupercainal is also great as Karen said.

Karen's idea about a bidet is good to. You might want to contact Connie (Thomas' mom). I think Thomas was around 10 and a little younger when he had his surgeries. Connie got a bidet and I think that really helped.

Unfortunately as you can tell by the posts already, different foods bother different people so it's basically trial and error.

For me, my main BB culpret was dairy foods. Once I cut those out and started drinking Soy milk things got much better. Again, trying to get a 10 year old to try Soy milk might be difficult but anything is worth a try if they are suffering so much.

Please pass on my best wishes.
