I had severe pain (like indigestion) about three nights ago and had to go to the emergency room. Was in hospital for a couple of days.

Had an endoscopy and had some moderate acute gastritis. Came home last night, but still feel sick, weak, and am pretty much passing watery diorhea.

My GI has not given me anything to take, as there was no bacteria present. How long does this gastritis stay around for??

It all depends on the cause. If it is due to stress or steroids, then it should resolve quickly over a period of a week or two. But, if it is due to something else, it is difficult to say.

Stay away from spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, and NSAIDs until this is fully resolved. Antacids may help.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

I find that Nexium and Prilosec work well for chronic gastritis. I take one Nexium every morning and one Prilosec every evening.

I have a tendency to develop gastritis after each surgery. It usually hangs around for 2-3 weeks, but taking nexium each day really seemed to help within 2 or 3 days. You might want to give that a shot.

Hi Glen,

I had acute gastritis about 5 years ago, it was horrible. I feel for you. I don't think I was given anything either. I just ahd to wait it out. I'd give the Nexium a try though. Hope you feel better soon. Smiler
