I was always told if I had an intestinal bug that I'd have to go to the ER for fluids. I once had it but I can't remember if I was tossing cookies too. I seem to remember it was just liquid D, even with 8 lomotil.
I had to have around 4 IV's, and it was the last day of school party. I had 40 parents and siblings coming, and my report cards were at home (they were to be handed out that afternoon!!!) Needless to say I was distraught, but it would take something like that to have me miss work at that point in my life. If it keeps up too long, I'd go anyway. Keep as much down as you can and maybe take some immodium and lomotil to see if it will slow it down. If it doesn't, I doubt you can drink enough to stay hydrated. Not the answer you wanted I'm sure. I hope it slows down and you feel better soon! Take care...Lori Lori Hippelheuser |

Duckie, It does sound like you have the classic intestinal bug, its been very bad in my area this year(boston). There really isn't a lot you can do, nothing will help to slow things down just let it run its course and try to drink if possible. If you feel like you're too dehydrated you will need to get to the hospital for IV Fluids. I know this because I unfortunately get the tummy flu EVERY YEAR

Duckie, also for me I know i'm too dehydrated when my eyes seem to be really sunk in my head. I actually get this so often that my wife said to me (just a few weeks ago) that it was time to get to the hospital because my eyes looked so sunk in. Good Luck Scott Mc

Thanks Lori and Scott.
It's been about 12 hours and it's still liquid. "Wow" on the gut pains, I didn't think it was possible to feel those pains again. Reminds me of the good ole UC days. I had a good cry, without tears and the cramps in my calfs have surfaced, so I guess it's time I go pay the Big H a visit. Though, I insist it will be a SHORT visit! |

Hi Tracey,
I'm so sorry you're feeling poorly! If you are still having clear yellow watery stool then I think it's time to get yourself down to ER for those fluids and maybe something to help stop those painful stomach cramps. I really do hope you feel better soon. Keep us posted. Luv & Hugs xxx This message has been edited. Hi Tracey, I just saw your post. I know you hate going to the ER, I do too, but I think it's time. I hope it is a short visit, and they can make you feel better. Please let me know how you are when you can. Sending prayers for a very short visit.

You could have food poisioning too. As much as a pain as it is you should go to ER. Once you get to a certain level of dehydration, no amount of pedialyte, gatoraid or water will bring you back.
Hoping you get better quick. |

Hi Tracey,
I hope today finds you a better! I had the same symptoms only with vomiting in December. Doc said it was probably Norovirus (sp?). Not pretty.......I felt I should have just set-up camp in the bathroom because I was spending more time in there than out. Positive vibes are being sent your way! \ UC diagnosed 2000 Gallbladder 1/5/2003 Colectomy 3/12/2003 J-Pouch 12/4/2003 |

It's always good to be home using one of your own bathrooms! It took 3 nurses and 5 pokes to get the IV started but all is well now.
Lots and lots of fluids including potassium did the trick. Doctor wanted to administer neausea and pain meds through the IV, but I'm one of those people that like to be in control when it comes to my medications. With a past (bad) experience with Reglan, I tend to panic with meds. (the doctors get impatient when you tell them what you DON'T want. I understand their reason, just wish they would understand mine). Xrays were ordered and all looked normal, not quite sure what the doctors were looking for, maybe an ileus? I knew it was only fluid my body needed. Doctors wanted to set up a cat scan to check for pouchitis but I promised to follow up with my own GI (they made the appointment for me). Is that how pouchitis is diagnosed, with a scan? Doctors mentioned it could be pouchitis, short gut (no way) or a virus. The virus thing is my guess, because I feel loads better after all those fluids and now I'm able to drink without vomiting. Even had a few crackers in the hospital before I left and they stayed down. I'll have a lazy day today, sitting on the sofa waching television. At least there is something exciting to watch, a young boy scout that was missing has been found. Yahoo! |

Hi Tracey,

Glad your home and feeling better. Dehydration sucks. Did you ever find out what started it? Did you have a virus? I swear I have a love/hate relationship with the hospital. Hate going but they take of us! I found a pair of slippers that I always take to the hospital and I swear I felt a little homesick or something thinking about last year and all 4 times of being in the hospital. I AM WEIRD.
Treat yourself to some R&R! |

Tracey,
I'm so glad that everything seems ok now! I'm thinking that you were right and it's something related to a virus. You would know if it was short gut, so that would narrow it down to pouchitis or virus. If it were pouchitis, you would probably still have symptoms as you haven't taken antibiotics to kick it's butt. So, virus sounds like the winner. And, I had an almost identical experience in January. I also went into the ER and had IV therapy but I took the anti-nausea meds with the IV. When I was discharged, I felt much better but still not 100%. It took a few days yet to get back to the full swing of things. I hope you get back to all better soon too. On another note, I've never heard about a catscan being able to diagnose pouchitis. I thought it needed to be diagnosed/confirmed with a scope because a visual appearance inside of the pouch is needed to meet/diagnose several of the symptoms of pouchitis. I don't think a catscan would be able to give them that much clarity. Rick ---------------------------------- KAAAAAABOOOOOOOOOOOOM!! |

What is short gut?

I have no idea what short gut is and when the doctor suggested it, I automatically said, "I don't have it". It didn't sound like something I wanted (hmm, I remember saying the same thing when they told me I had UC...lol). It is most definatley a virus because my oldest son started throwing up last night. I have to remember to relax and realize my son is not going to dehydrate like I did.
You are strange Laurie...missing the hospital..LOL (just teasing you) Rick, I follow up with my GI next week. I'm curious as to what he will say about the pouchitis and short gut (I have no doubt I have either). I'm a bit late on my annual scope and bet when he does take a look he will find a well behaved pouch. I've learned one thing from this experience, do not wait so long to go to the ER, things just are not going to get better on their own after a certain point. Happy healthy pouch days to all |
