For a little background, I had my takedown about 13 weeks ago and recently have been having some aching pain in my left side around the bottom of my rib cage. Sometimes it gets severe and causes me to get really nauseated. The pain resonates from front to back. I take deep breaths and eventually it calms down in about 10-30 minutes. It comes here and there and really worries me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm having a stricture dilated and my pouch checked out for the first time on Monday and will address this additional problem with my surgeon.

Sounds like an obstruction. Good call in planning on telling your surgeon about this symptom. Not an emergency, but worth getting it on the books, particularly if it is persistent.

i have had pain under my rib cage on the left side since i first got sick with uc, all during my surgeries, and still, several years after takedown. i don't always have it. it is mainly in front but sometimes radiates to my back. on occasion i feel it on the right side too. even though the pain isn't severe, it makes me more cautious about eating than any of the other myriad of issues i have. i always mention it to every dr., but they never seem to focus on it. it seems to flare up when i have other flaring symptoms. what the heck is under there!??

Thanks for your responses. I'm trying not to worry about it. Hopefully this too will pass and I won't have this as a recurring problem.

Just another thought, make sure that labwork for amylase and lipase is done to rule out pancratitis. Could also be gastritis. The fact that your pain radiates to the back, is a concern of pancreatitis.

Thats sounds exactly like the symptoms I had with a mild case of pancreatitis - I hope you get it figured out, whatever it is.

Does anyone know what Warrens pain was? Did it end up being pancreatitis or an obstruction or did it work its way out? Sue

The reason I am asking is because I have pain on the left side. But no nausea, I am still having BM's. Recently I was put on Flagyl for pouchitis. The pain comes and goes, if I take a pain killer it goes quicker and then I won't have the pain for a day or two. But it comes back. The thought of the hospital makes me nuts. What to do? The pain is fine now because I took Tylenol 3. Any ideas? Any? Thanks, Sue

Well the smart thing to do is to have it investigated. Taking pain killers is not a solution and could just cause you to delay necessary treatment.

Chances are it is just a partial obstruction, but since it is fairly consistent, you should see your doctor about it. It does not mean being in the hospital.
