I have never had an abcess before but am wondering if it possible. Very sore butt with a red swollen area at about 5 oclock. Feels like a little horn under the skin that is very painful. Have been really not feeling well lately. 20 plus movements per day with pain and pressure. Lots of lower abdominal and pelvic pain as well as alot of pain in my back. Upper right side. Was at GP last week and having gallbladder Ultrasound next week to see if it that. But now I am wondering if this has something to do with it. Have been not very well since last July on Cipro 500mg daily and 250 Flagyl, 6 weeks ago started on 3 endocort a day and cortifoam. Have not really noticed any large signifant change. Getting very frustrated. Friday at work was nearly doubled over in pain for 2 hours then when I wend to the washroom I passed a ton of blood and the pain went away(pain was in abdomin) Does any of this make any sense to anybody. Please help.

susan, that sounds exactly like my abcess...pain in one area, redness, hard spot...and pain when having bowel movements, and bleeding.......i had several tests (ct scan and barium enema) but it only showed up when i finally had an mri and they really looked closely at the area. i would ask for an mri and sort it out....once an abcess is drained it feels much better!

What do you do in the meantime to try and help with it. How do they drain it.

well, i had mine for 3 months before they drained it......the reason i waited so long is that they make an incision and drain it..and then clean out the area (i was under anaesthetic for it). i was in the hospital a couple days after to recover, but mine was really deep down so i had a very deep cut...and mine was close to important muscles for having control of bowel movements. there are different kinds of abcesses...some are easier to get at.....but they just get bigger and more painful the longer you wait, and i was afraid mine would burst open and poison my whole body.

it did help my pain to have lots of hot baths, and i took some pain killers for inflammation ( i can take advil with no problems, but some ppl can't...). the hot baths also draw the infection closer to the surface, making it easier for a surgeon to drain it. if you can see pink, then it is probably very near the surface already tho.

i would definitely go see a surgeon and ask him if he thinks it is an abcess, and ask for tests. it might be something else..who knows. i didn't just have an abcess, i also had a fistula attatched to it. and that was the source of my bleeding i think. i would go see a surgeon if you have pain and not try to avoid the doctor...if you are in pain you should not ignore it.
i hope you find some relief soon, good luck.
