my surgeon told me, as long as i am passing gas i can leave the hospital the next day. does that seem too fast? i thought first 24 hours i was on an all liquid diet? then they introduce soft GI foods the next day. i dont want to leave hospital after only liquids then start real food at home and have issues. any thoughts?

This does not sound right at all.
I know the CC. That has never been the policy in the past.
Do you have insurance?
I am hoping you misunderstood. Most are in the hospital 5-7 days.

Wow, that does seem fast. It's an easier surgery than the last, but still 24 hours?? I was there about a week if I recall. Don't let them make you leave if you are not ready. Sucks to get home and have to go back in worse shape than when you left.
Good Luck!!!!

I was out (of Mayo) in two earlier this month. Surgery Tuesday am, out Thursday am. As long as your bowel is working (at Mayo this did not mean just gas; they wanted evidence!), vitals stable, there's no sign of incisional infection, and you're tolerating an advanced diet (they definitely were not going to let me out before I successfully ate soft solids), better to be out than in. I didn't feel fantastic the next few days in the hotel, but I felt a lot better than I would have in the hospital.

Plus, the hotel was probably cleaner/less risk of infection than the hospital (no rap on Mayo housekeeping; that's just the nature of hospitals).

Good luck!

Like Charlotte, I was out in two days after takedown surgery. I'm assuming that is the surgery you're having, right? If they're constructing the j-pouch and performing takedown I'd think it would be a bit longer than 1 or 2 days. I also think they won't be sending you home if you're not ready to go home. So don't worry about the timeline.

Good luck with your surgery!

I was in the hospital for 5 days, however, I also had a collapsed lung occur on the morning when I was supposed to be discharged! (Which was no fun at all!)

I can't envision leaving the day after surgery, that just seems wayyy toooo quick. But, they are doctors and we're not. If your truly feeling up to it and they allow you to go, go! Smiler

Exactly what are you calling step 2?
I know things are done differently all the time in many hospitals.
I was out in 24 hrs after takedown, that was 20 years ago.
I had 3 steps.
I am glad your nurse cleared up any questions you had.

I can hear the excitement in your writing.
I am sending good vibes for a quick discharge and no complications.
Walk, walk, walk.
I always take gas x to the hospital. It helps tremendously since anaesthesia and pain meds can cause gas pains.

I had my takedown on Tues afternoon, and went home Friday morning. They offered to let me go Thurs night, but I declined since I hadn't had solid food yet. If you are not ready, make sure you tell them. Odds are they will let you stay, as long as it is reasonable.
