Phew, what a subject, but need to get it under control.
Had my J pouch constructed 19 months ago, I had cancer of the rectum, so they removed my rectum, left a rectal collar, cut away the sigmoid colon, then pulled the rest down to make a J pouch. So far so good, all my checks have me clear of cancer, put all my weight back on(and some more unfortunately). Bm's are pretty good, only go to the bathroom 2 or sometimes 3 times a day, the latter trip is kind of clustered, take about three attempts to empty the pouch. My biggest, or should I say my families biggest problem is flatulence, mine of course. My diet consists of most things, with the exception of the Brassica family, legumes etc, however I do eat cauliflower. I also tend to eat a low residue diet, changed to all stuff 'white' It drives me nuts, sometimes it is so bad it wakes me up during the night and I 'fart' every minute or so, and normally it is always so smelly, to the point of embarrassment. Hoping to get some tips, tricks and home remedies to help me combat the howling wind I do appreciate you help, and this forum has given so much help and friendship. You'll be careful out there Regards Bob Rectal Cancer Stage 1( 1 mm into Stage 2) Ultra Low Anterior Rescection Most of Rectum and some Bowel removed J Pouch Feb 2009 Takedown May 2009 |

Perhaps you have mild pouchitis and maybe you need to try some antibiotics.
Sounds like there is an overgrowth of bacteria in there. Sometimes I am surprised I haven't gassed the whole household to death with my toxic brew. A day or 2 on ciprofloxocilin or augmentin duo forte, and the smell is gone and the gas subsided. I only last a few days, then take a few more tablets as my pouch is antibiotic dependent/ or I have antibiotic dependent pouchitis. Which ever way you word it, it REALLY REALLY works wonders for the pong. I am in Perth too, and there is no problem getting these meds from the Dr's. I have been takings antibiotics on and off for this reason for a decade. Check it out with your colorectal surgeon or your GP. Good luck. |

Probiotics can be good too, to try to put the good bacteria back into your gut and control the gas. Avoid food mixes like carbs+protiens + fruits (makes beer in your gut so to speak...creates tons of gas!)
chewing mint leaves gives those farts a very sweet smell (yup, it does work); so does chewing on either orange or lemon rind (it makes it smell like a bowl of popourri! Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |
