Hi all
Hopefully someone has an answer for these urges to go to the toilet. I seem to get along fine most of the day yet as soon as i get comfortable at night these rotten urges come on sometimes every five mins or less that last late into the night. 2 nights ago i was on the toilet about 8-9 times needless to say not getting too much sleep when this happens either.I am on codiene flagyl loperamide and oxycontin for the throbbing pain i get in my rectum. These contractions as i call them along with the buttburn are making my evenings pretty awful. I'm now avioding going out at night because i don't want to take the risk that i'll end up being a misery guts that wants to go home early. Rob |

Hi Rob. I'm no expert and having plenty of problems myself, just thought I'd try to offer any advice I could.
I have the same problem at night, although it's been a lot better since I've started taking metamucil. I still get more urges to go at night than during the day, but it's way better than it was before. I am also taking flagyl right now, along with cipro. I get similar 'contractions' but If I go to the bathroom immediately, it calms down and then goes away. It sounds like yours is much worse than mine, I'm sorry I'd like to do more in the evening as well. I just sit at home and play video games because of the bathroom/tiredness. Video games are fun though so it's not too bad If you haven't tried metamucil/psyllium yet, please give it a try. I hope your feeling better soon. I'll be thinking of you when I'm sitting on the can at 2am tonight, lol! Hi Rob, I think sarah had some good suggestions, but I think alot of people experience the same things you are at this early stage of your recovery. I was using the metamucil wafers and had some success with it but you must be careful how much you take and how much you drink. I now take fiber con 2x daily because my GI think they are more gentle than the wafers.
For the butt burn the only thing that seemed to help me is the calmoseptine, use plenty of it prior to you BM's and some afterwards. Good luck and feel better, Craig |

Rob,
If you have terrible BB and spasms, you might have fissures that are contributing to the problem. It's kind of self-perpetuating actually. Do you have to push/strain at all to empty during the day? Straining can cause little fissures (cuts) to form which then cause pain and can cause spasms. Then, when your muscles are good and tired at night and get a chance to relax, they start to go nuts. You go 8-9 times in the night - further aggravating any fissures and BB, making your butt more likely to spaz. Go figure. Craig said this is common in the early stages of recovery, and it is. But if you are 4 1/2 months out, you shouldn't still have this severe a problem - especially with everything you are taking. The only solutions are: time, reducing frequency, and firming up the stool. Sounds like you are taking plenty of meds to try and accomplish this. I would totally concur that you need to try metamucil (or its equivalent). Look up the 'DIY Wafers' recipe to try and make your own: http://j-pouch.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9151071921/m/5971...481066812#1481066812 Also, once you are off the antibiotic, try starting on a probiotic like Culturelle or VSL#3. Rob,
The functionality of the smooth formula is not that different from the wafers. The ingredients in the wafers is different and seems to work better. If you want to see the difference, put a bit of both glasses of water and see what happens to them. The powder soaks up the water and expands an incredible amount. Now imagine that goo pushing its way through your system. It probably does a good job of water absorption and moves things through but will not do as well as the wafers at bulking your stool.
