My daughter had the j pouch surgery in 1 step a little over a month ago at Children's Hosp. of Phila. She's 14. About a week ago, she developed fever and pain. Long story short...we came back to the hospital last thurs (3/6), did a ct scan, and found an abcess. On fri. they drained over 6 ounces of yuk, then put in a jp drain. Initially, the output was pinkish (for the first day or so), but now...the output has turned into this yellow, stinky disgusting stuff (pus?) they cultured it and determined exactly which antibiotics to use, which they started. But now, 4 days later, it's still coming out. Could that still just be the abcess draining? Could it be a leak? It's not the same color as her bm...also, wouldn't there be ecoli in the culture if it were a leak?? If it's an abcess, when the heck will this pus stop? Any thoughts?

Hi, sorry to hear about your daughter. I had a similar problem after my first, you have to ask the Dr if he thinks the leak could be comminicating with the small bowel, that is usually the only reason it would continue to drain alot. If not, they should have an explanation, if you are not satisfied you should immediately call the Cleveland Clinic, DR Remzi is one of the best in the country,I had my first procedure at u of p and I had so many problems that they did not find, she should really be seen by an expert in pouch surgery,if any problems persist. Good Luck, Ed
You can have a tiny leak that sealed itself up (I did) and have a huge abscess form over a month or more (I did). Mine held about a pint, drained for about a month. They did not pull the drain until the abscess pocket completely collapsed (checking with weekly CT scans). I never had any recurrence. I was sent home after about 12 days and irrigated with water daily to keep the drain open.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. I too have the same situation. I was operated on Feb. 20 for the first stage. A few days later developed fever and infection. A drainage tube was inserted into buttocks. After two ct scans I still have a small absess and leak and I continue to have to have the tube, which is quite uncomfortable, but it is getting smaller and I hope it comes out soon. good luck

Hi there. I hope your daughter starts feeling better soon. I had a similar situation where I had a large abcess along my incision line after my second surgery. It took 2 and a bit months to heal completely and it continued draining fluid (gross yellow puss stuff) for alittle over a month of that time. I also had a bad fever in the beginning but was given antibiotics and it went away quicky. I remember being very grossed out by it and thinking that it would never heal...but it did! and now I'm back to normal Goodluck
