Same as Debra here.
Dec 2005 - I developed horrible sores on my lower legs and joint pain hip to toes, hospitalized and for a week it was... no clue what is wrong with you. They finally (mis)diagnosed me as general vasculitis. It all healed on 60 mgs of pred a day and I was told that was a life sentence. Though I still use a cane when the join pain gets super bad (My GI surgeon told me that nothing will make that go away). Exercise keeps it pretty in check for me.
fast forward to Feb 2007 - Flu from hell I thought, blood work had my doctor calling me and telling me to go to the ER, my hemoglobin was 6 (I had no visible blood loss, just diarrhea). Immediately I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis.
I had had a urgent care doctor telling me between those two events that vasculitis is rarely an illness on it's own and I needed to get off the prednisone.
April 2007 - A second opinion confirmed the Urgent care doctors. A type of vasculitis called pyoderma gangrenosum, a side effect for UC (not normally seen before the disease, but mine too came on super fast and deadly).
After trying course after course of medicine, and begging for surgery since June 2006, I finally had surgery Febuary 11, 2008.

Hi tx, Just a helpful hint here...if you look on the blue toolbar and see the "find" button, you can do a search of the entire site for questions that come up for you. I use it all of the time and often, I've found my answer and don't have to wait for a response. Just a suggestion Also, you might want to get an MRI of that hip...might be something going on that needs attention.

I started getting joint pain and lower back pain from Crohn's. It has been getting worse over the last three years. I had my JP done int 1999. After having so many problems I went to Cleveland Clinic and they said I had Crohn's. They also informed me that joint pain is associated with IBD and JP.

Not to scare you all, but to inform so that you can be on the lookout. My daughter was recently diagnosed with avascular necrosis (aka) osteonecrosis...meaning bone death) and found it by chance. We thought she was developing inflammatory arthritis because of the swelling and pain in her joint. She has it in both knees, right elbow and possibly other places. She's still being evaluated. It's a devastating bone disease whose risk factor is steroid use. I want to warn people because I just wonder how many IBD sufferers are walking around with this and don't know it until the bone collapses. MRI's are the best at detecting this.

Thanks, Elise, I am going to ask my doctor next time I am at Cleveland Clinic. Sometimes I feel like my 88 year old grandfather. I get up and my joints stiffen up until I walk and stretch. I can hear bones and joints crackling, it is eery feeling.
