Jan, I hope you see this posting. Evelyn here....I posted a message about needing specific cuffitis symptoms back on April 29th. You replied and I appreciate it. I noticed that you said you take sulfasalazine. I do as well, but have questioned if it is really doing that much for me since 2/3 of the drug is broken down in the colon. Since we don't have a colon we are only getting 1/3 of the benefit of the drug. From what I understand 1/3 is broken down in the small intestine. Have you heard this? What do you think?

It all depends on how much bacteria you have. Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) becomes bioavailable by breaking of the chemical bonds by the action of bacteria (as opposed to time release or slow release from a matrix in Asacol).

So, maybe it works enough or maybe not. I suppose the proof is in the pudding (or poop) and it will either work or it will not. If not, then suppositories it is.

I have a strange reason for hoping I never have to use Sulfasalazine again. Prior to my surgery I was on Sulfasalazine. It didn't do much for me but it certainly did an act on my toilet seat! Turned it orange! Now I have a costly bidet and the entire mechanism is either in the toilet seat or right below it. The very thought of having it turn orange is enough to scare me. It was cheap to replace a toilet seat for a fresh new while one. Now it would be a major cost item!

I have using Azulphidine for my cuffitis for the past two years. It seems to be working great for me!! And alot cheaper than the Canasa. I hope everything works out for you.
