I am going on vacation soon and plan on swimming. I have read some posts about some of you using a waterproof tape to help keep your bag on. What is this tape called? Any other suggestions for being in the water?
Thanks in advance. Alexandra UC DX 03/1997 Gallbladder removed 07/04/05 Step 1 11/09/06 TD 07/13/07 |

Alexander - it's a pink tape called Hytape. Here's one site that has it: www.imed.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/KA950/S/637058 But I think most well-stocked pharmacies carry it too.
Have fun swimming and vacationing and having fun. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Grateful Dead |

I swim 3 times a week in a water aerobics class. I have not used anything extra to protect my wafer and have not had trouble. But I limit my water exposure to one hour at a time.

When I'm on vacation I'm in and out of the water all day. I never use anything extra to keep my appliance on. I do however use closed end bags just as added protection against a clip failure (which I've never had).

When I had mine I would roll up the bottom of the bag a couple of times so it wasn't so long and I would tape the clip, just for my peace of mind. And boy shorts definitely worked out the best for me. Of course I had my bag 8 years ago and now you can get the cadillac of pouches that I didn't have!

Dear Alexandra,
I swim all summer long with my bag. Sometimes I use the Hy-Tape around the edges of the wafer tape, just for a little added confidence, and sometimes I don't. I do think that wearing an ostomy belt is very helpful. I order my Hy-Tape from Edgepark Surgical. They're great. The tape comes in several widths. Good luck, and have a great time. I always used a tape or else the edge of the wafer started peeling after a short time in the water.
If the appliance is visible above your bathing suit bottom, you can wear a rashguard shirt which is designed to be worn in the water and can be found at most sports/surf stores. These also provide protection from the sun. If you are going to body surf or play in the waves I recommend a shorty wetsuit to keep the appliance in place. I obviously learned this the hard way but luckily the belt kept things together until I got to a washroom. Which leads to my last point, always take a couple of extra appliances to the beach. Have fun. |
