Hi Everyone

Hope you guys can help. I have used Chiron barrier cream on my rear end to stop butt burn since my take down in 2001 but have just been told it is no longer manufactured. Any alternatives that are as good?
I live in England
Cheers
Bert

Hi Bert,

Welcome to the family. Smiler

That's strange because I am still able to get Chiron cream here. My good friend and stoma nurse is the one who orders all the ostomy and wound care supplies for the island and knows that I use it so I'm sure she would have mentioned if they had stopped manufacturing it. I'll have to ask her about that.

Anyway, you could try Pelican cream which is very similar and also has the 2% aluminium chlorhydrate in it which is the key ingredient of Chiron cream.

The cream that the hospital sent me home with after my j-pouch surgery 12 years ago was called Comfeel cream, which is made by Coloplast, and that worked pretty well but as it was expensive and wasn't covered by our local Health & Social Security I stopped using it.

I must admit that it never occured to me to use Chiron cream when I had my j-pouch, I use it under my ostomy appliance at the moment so hope they don't discontinue it. Have you tried Sudofed cream? That worked the best for me when I got butt burn but was a bit messy so I had to use a pantyliner to stop it soiling my underwear.

Anyway, there are a lot of alternatives out there to try so hopefully we will both find something if they do discontinue the Chiron cream.

By the way, where did you have your suregry and who was your surgeon? I had all but my last surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and my surgeon was Professor Neil Mortensen.

Take care and let us know if you find a good alternative.

Hiya Shell
I am not really new to the j-pouch web site but have had to re register cos I've not been on for a while. I have swapped messages with you in the past cos I've been to Jersey 2 or 3 times and I seem to recall telling you my favourite place was Portelet Bay!!
Thanks for your reply I will probably have to get in touch with my stoma nurse to see if the chemists are telling me the truth!!
Not been in touch with the nurse for ages cos I haven't had any problems
hey I used to use liners when I was suffering from colitis !!
We even had the conversation about surgeons etc - Mr Mughal did it in my local hospital in Chorley in 3 stages.

Cheers
Bert

Hi again Bert, Smiler

I remember you now, especially since you mentioned that Portlet bay was one of your favourite beaches here on the island. Smiler

I tried to find someone on the net who might supply Chiron cream but didn't get any joy. It's made by Simcare but nothing much has come up with that either so it looks like you might be right about it being discontinued. I think I'll have to see if I can get a couple of tubes while we still have stocks of it over here. I know that Pelican cream is similar but I've tried it before and found the Chiron worked much better for me.

Good luck with your hunt. If you do find somewhere that still sells it then I would stock up on it if were you, which is what I intend to.

I will do Bert. Smiler

Still haven't spoken to Marlene yet about it but we have a meeting coming up at the beginning of next month so if I don't see her before I'll ask her about it then.

Good luck. Smiler

I use zinc oxide cream. It works well and is not as expensive as Calmoseptine. Also, it doesn't stain the underwear.

Hi Chris,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I found out from Marlene (my friend and stoma nurse) that they have discontinued Chiron cream altogether. Frowner

Marlene does all the ordering for most of our island's ostomists so she gets to speak to the suppliers on a regular basis and unless you can get some old stock you'll be out of luck. I only have a tube and a half left so I don't know what I'll do when it runs out. I've tried the Pelican cream but it just doesn't work as well at keeping the heat rash at bay under my wafer.

If anyone knows of a secret stash anywhere please let us know.... looks like it could be on the black market soon! Big Grin

Hi Bert,

I use Boots own Aqueous Cream and it works well for me. You will probably need to ask for it at the pharmacy counter, as they seem to 'hide' it there, but it is also really cheap Smiler

Don't use another make as they can sting Eeker

Also if the BB is bad, put some on before you 'go' and then again after, which helps protect from the acid and makes cleaning up easier.

Hope this helps.

Hi Marina,

It may be fine for butt burn but if it is greasy it's no good for me under my wafer. Do you know what the ingredients are in it?

The reason I like Chiron is because it is non-greasy and therefore doesn't interfere with the adhesive properties on my wafers. It also has an antiperpirant in it (aluminium trinitrate) so it's great for stopping the sweat from lifting my wafer in hot weather.

Hi thx Shell

I have found that e45 anti itch cream is a reasonable soloution for now the doc gave me coloplasts cream its sticky and more or less useless for me I cant understand why the supply from the us has been discountinued but its another sympton of us having a disability thats not reconised by the gov etc id like to see how the health minister would cope with 12 trips to the loo and a sore bum every day and night
