For those of you who are dealing with Osteopenia/low bone mass, what medications, if any, are you taking? I had a bone density performed 4 plus years ago and had my second one just last week as part of my physical and received the results today... Osteopenia. (Thank you prednisone. )
I'm not able to tolerate dairy since surgery (3 years ago). Currently, I take protonix for reflux; I'd like to avoid taking something that is going to aggravate the reflux or cause issues with my pouch/more output, etc. My family doctor recommened Fosomax or Boniva. After doing a few searches here, it sounds like a few of those meds haven't been good for some of you. Wondering what works for those of you with Osteopenia? Many thanks for your input.
Duckie, I had a dexa scan last year and have osteopenia due to prednisone use(on and off for 10yrs.), I take protonox for my stomach and the Dr. also prescribed actonel for my bone health,1 pill a week. None of these meds gives me any problems.

I took Actonel for a while with no problems. I had severe IBD/c. diff/inflammation at the time, so no way to know if it was bothering me. It did reverse my osteopenia. I have been off of it for probably 3 years now and my last DEXA was clear. It worked There are now monthly bisphosphonates (Boniva) that would seem easier to take than weekly. Sometimes I would forget.

Hi, If you have severe reflux, taking Actonel, Fosamax, or Boniva can cause problems--it can give you esophagitis. Boniva also comes as a IV injection that you can get every 3 months that you can use if you have severe reflux. But if your reflux is controlled with the protonix, taking the meds as a pill should be okay. Remember, that you also need to be on calcium 1500mg/day and Vitamin D around 800 units/day.

I take Protonix or Prilosec OTC for reflux. I was on weekly Fosamax tablets but my bone density seemed to continue its downhill path. I have Osteopenia. Well, I now have a Boniva infusion IV once every three months and the last time I had a bone density test my numbers had improved....for the first time! I have another bone density test in June. We'll see if the trend continues. I hope so!
