Hello I need some advice. I had my take down 4 months ago and up to a week ago I was on antibiotics Flagyl and Cipro. After about a week off the antibiotics I am now going more frequently and getting some painful gas. I started on the VSL3 2 packs a day but I am wondering if that is too heavy a dose. I am also getting some bad butt burn again in particular everytime I go its like all the nerve endings go crazy . Looking for some advice and wondering if it is just the body ajusting to my new pouch. As well any suggestions on how to neutrilize the stool so it is not so alkaline ?

It might be easier on your system if you start slowly on the VSL. Try 1/2 a pack a day for a few days and slowly increase when you feel your gut has adjusted to it. Probiotics can cause a lot of gas at first. I tried VSL for about a month and it never got any better. You may have to try another kind (Flora-Q; Culturelle...) of probiotics till you find one that works for you.
I am in Ottawa ON and I was given a new probiotic called TuZen by my GI and they seem to be keeping my system happy. Don't know if you can get them out in BC or not. When I started to cut back on the Flagyl and Cipro I had the same thing happen. My gas and output increased and so did the BB. Try to eat a bland diet for a few days. I had to cut out dairy during the first few months after my TD as they caused a lot of gas and BB. Now I can eat just about anything. ** Christine ** UC dx Oct 2003; Step 1 - 10/8/2005; TakeDown - 05/19/2006; pouchitis dx Dec 2006 The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.
