i think i was told to do a liquid diet the night before and nothing after midnight. why would it not require a golytly drink or phosphore soda or something to empty the bowel completely? wouldnt it be safer to have it empty due to possible infection?

I'll be interested to see what others say, because yes - I would double-check and ask why that is all the prep you need to do. This might be appropriate for Takedown surgery, but not step #1.

They wanted me clean, clean, clean in the hospital prior to surgery. Granted, I was in a bit more of an emergency situation - but still. I had a couple doses of phospho soda and a couple enemas prior to surgery.

So yes, I would think magnesium citrate, phospho soda, and/or golytly would be required. They will cut the bowel and you don't want stool spilling out.

I had a Golytely prep, neomycin tablets, AND a neomycin enema as a prep, but that was over 12 years ago.

I certainly would double check at least a couple of days before surgery if I were you.

Last year I had revision surgery, and I did the miralax surgery for takedown. I had to empty a container of miralax into 64 ounces of gatorade, any color but red or purple. It wasn't terrible, and it worked pretty quickly.

Yep, had Miralax for one colonoscopy. Actually though, they had me do that and then Golytly later in the day. Talk about overkill.

The Miralax is definitely better than any of the other options.

That is a very interesting question. What about people such as my self and countless others on this site who were too ill and had to have emergency surgery therefore not being able to have the colon cleaned out properly. What happens then?

I don't recall any prep for my surgery. Granted I hadn't eaten or drank anything for almost a month. I didn't have any complications related to infection or the like.

I was asked to have nothing after midnight the night before. My surgeon said it was easier on me to clamp off the colon and remove it than to go throught the prep.

I had been in the hospital for 2 weeks and barely ate, yet they still had me do the prep before my emergency surgery and I keep thinking "there's nothing to clean out!" I had already been going to the bathroom 30 times a day and with the golytely-I don't think I slept at all the night before!

The second step however was just clear liquids the day before and nothing after midnight.

I would double check as to why they are not having you do a proper prep.

I was in the hospital for 4 weeks prior to my surgery and didnt have prep either... but I was on a clear liquid diet and that wasnt even staying down so when they wanted to do a scope the next morning the doc didnt have me do a prep. Then about 3-4 hours after the scope and the surgen had been called I was on the table getting the colon removed. I guess it all depends on if there is time to do the prep or not huh?
