Horseback Riding...Ouch!

So, I've been feeling better! Yay! I decided to go horseback riding with a good friend yesterday. I grew up riding in KY and that and dance were two things I missed the most when I was sick, so as soon as I felt well enough, off I went. My joints are still too wonky to do any difficult dancing, but I thought I could handle some horseback riding. Ugh, we trotted the whole time. Oh my achin' arse! Not even like the normal outside muscle pain of glutes-my jpouch is sore from all the jostling, I'd imagine. I really love doing it and I think it would be better if I were cantering or something that wasn't so violently literally smacking against my bottom. Anyway...it was fun but I'm paying for it today!! Does anyone else here ride regularly with a j-pouch? I would imagine it would get conditioned to riding like the rest of your body...maybe?

No discomfort here from riding but in my early days I did have discomfort from a hard bike seat.

Yeah this is def. from the trotting b/c it's my pouch-like up inside sore. It was okay when I was posting, but you know how it takes a while for you to find your rhythm with a new horse. Also hadn't ridden in like 2 yrs! I think I could be okay if I did it more regularly and got conditioned and could post correctly the first time Smiler
Thx! Good to know there's a poucher out there riding regularly!

I didn't like trotting even in the good ol' days when I was young and rode all the time. It's either full out or walking. Trotting the whole time sounds like torture.

But when I've ridden after not riding for a very long time, I can't believe how much my butt hurts.

No trotting! No trotting! And posting? None of that either. You sort of went for the double whammy.

But there's nothing like being on horse enjoying the day, is there?

With my arthritis, I could't even handle just sitting on a horse! My hips would feel like they are dislocating... I'm better off walking.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Yeah...good point Kathy...I think posting helped in a way when I had the right rhythm, but it still probably wasn't a smart choice. I went on a ride with a friend and neither of us had ridden in a couple years so we went for the intermediate which was primarily trotting. I thought it would prob. be bad, but of course, I did it anyway! The little bit that we cantered was fine and I always loved a full on gallopSmiler You said a mouthful though-there's just something so peaceful and good for your soul about running with horse. I miss it, but my pouch obviously doesn't. I have been "laid up" as my mom would say, since Sunday! Jan, my knees and hips are killing me too, but that was more aftershock. I prob. just need to stick to yoga and walking!

Boy are all of you couragous! I barely do the stairs without paying big time...I gave up diving, running and anything that could possibly shake up my poor pouch! Horses? Only in paintings!
I salute all of your courage...
Sharon

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Sharon, I'm not sure I'd define it as courageous, more stupidity on my part! Stupidity with a dash of denial mixed with my devil-may-care attitude.

Also, just looked up shock absorbing saddles. This may be a good idea for us!

I love to ride but I do pay for it. I found the best thing for my pouch is to get out of the saddle all together when trotting or cantering (2 point position). When I'm in the saddle posting and cantering my pouch bleeds. I love love love to ride.

Me too Keri. It sucks, quite frankly, when something you love to much causes physical pain. I figure when I'm wealthy enough to own my own horses, I can figure out something-ridiculously padded saddles, perhaps a horse that flies. haha

I've ridden horses regularly for over 20 years and have continued riding with both my ileostomy and j-pouch. I took about a year off to let everything heal after my final surgery (and to ensure that stuff wouldn't get bounced out when we trotted) but I've had not problems. I've even done a couple of small competitions since I had my takedown. Wouldn't trade it for anything!

But if you haven't ridden in eons, your butt will be sore, pouch or no pouch!

*Very happy poucher!

Yeah...I can deal with the "butt" soreness, it's my pouch being sore up inside for days that I can't deal with. I have mechanical issues w/ it anyway, so I think any jostling around just exacerbates it. I've been having incontinence ever since...I love riding, but I love not pooping on myself at night more Smiler

My surgeon told a friend of mine to get in his car and drive over railroad tracks when he thought he had a blockage. I'm still laughing! Guess my surgeon wasn't a horse person!
