UGH! Last night at midnight, I got up to empty the gas out of my bag because it was pretty full. So full that I had to kind of lean back to open up the velcro seal (I was trying a new bag, those velcro seals are a nightmare in themselves, but that's a different story...) and I noticed the gas leaking - BEFORE I opened up the velcro! Turns out I had a leak Frowner. Luckily my mom was there to help me and it took nearly an hour to get a new bag on. I went back to the old kind of bag with the plastic clip (1piece - I had tried a 2piece but I was unsatisfied), but before that, we had to deal with my VERY active stoma. We finally just washed it a bit,put the powder for skin irritation on, the 3m spray, eakin ring, and the bag on as quick as we possibly could with plenty of paper towels handy. We were, in the end, successful...

But MAN! Can't the stoma be a little cooperative?! haha. Nice to know that we can do an emergency bag change, though. And I feel much more comfortable with this kind of bag on. I just hope my skin irritation will FINALLY go away (theres a 1/3 inch of bright red skin around my stoma!), but that may just be the plight of an innie stoma.

Could you be making the hole to your stoma either too big or too small if that redness goes all the way around???

ps a good site to go to for ostomy questions is ostomates.org
There is Shaz's osotomy site which is a lot like this one....

My #1 tip for bag/barrier changes is: never do it anywhere outside the bathtub.

I usually prep everything on a table next to the tub (including opening up the barrier package, putting the Adapt or Eakin seal on the back, etc.), get in and soak to get the barrier off, drain the tub, peel off the barrier/bag, then lean over. Let the stoma do what it will--the tub is washable. When it takes a break for a minute, stick on the barrier and get the bag attached to it. (I'm usually still leaning over for this.) Once everything is sealed up, peel off the backing to the tape on the barrier (if any) and finish sticking it on. Clean up all leftover everything.

So far I haven't ever had it take me more than 15 minutes using this method. Pass it on if it helps!
