Ok, so I have been working hard at not being paranoid and getting on with life...and therefore invited the neighbours over for a holiday coctail party last night...
Murphy's law?? Oh yeah!
Oven bust first and then after lunch (potato omlette) I started to get sever pain around the sternum/chest area..I was stuck in traffic on my way home from a cat scan....1.5 hours later made it home and the pain got worse..like a little man with big boots was kicking me inside my chest...at 6 pm I went up to shower and change and my whole chest and inguinal area were covered in huge rash...took a claratin. I had 8 guests on the way over a 3 quiches in my broken oven. Got dressed and got downstairs. By 8 the rash covered my neck, chest, thighs and ears. Little man kept kicking. By 10 it was crawling down my arms and leggs. Took a benedryl at 11pm. By midnight I was covered from head to toe (the guests had gone and I had not eaten anything) and it started welting up badly. Went to emerge...3 hours later and another benedryl we gave up on emerge and came home. I slept for 4 hrs and woke up, had coffee and now the rash is coming back...in my eyes, ears and mouth...my hair itches...called sos doctor (expensive housecall) because ER is full of sick people with the flu and drunken car accidents and I am not a priority...My MD is away and the local pharmacy refuses to help...little man is still in my chest but traded his boots for slippers...it knocks around but not as hard..I think that the allergy/inflamation is in the digestive tract too...water hurt going down...
What is this????????
Sharon

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

I have no clue. Maybe you have developed an allergy to eggs? Keep taking the Benadryl though until the symptoms abate or you are seen by a doctor.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks Jan..still scratching...got a shot this afternoon, cortisone, and it barely made a dent...took another benedryl at 5, at 9 and although I am down to only a reaction on my hands and feet...scratch, scraatch, scraaaaatch!

Finally ate a little for dinner but...scratch!
Merry Christams...scratch, scratch....sniff, scratch!

Little update on the rash....the next morning had coffee and was fine so I had some toast for lunch...bad idea! My face, eyes and lips started swelling and then I could no longer swallow water and breathing got tight so I took another benedryl , crushed it first and called an ambulance. They put me on hold for 20 minutes!
Well the symptoms went down very slowly but finally abated for good...it took an hour for me to be able to swallow properly and the ambulance never came, I live out of town so suburbs are badly served!
I am still scratching a bit but it has been over24 hours without major flare up!
Still no idea what caused it though. Will go see my allergy specialist in Jan when he gets back.

Oh my...I sincerely hope this never happens to you again. What a scary experience. I hope your allergist can shed some light on what happened so you can avoid whatever triggered it.
Take care
Judy

I know that I have allergies but usually to sulphides etc...preservatives and stuff like that....but never from nothing..the SOS dr. said that it may be a reaction due to the teflon patch that they used to fix the hernia mixed with some other element..what he called crossed allergies??? Now I get to test all over again everything I eat..makes life so much more interesting! Big Grin

I too suffer from hives like that and just before I fell preg with this one I had them quite bad for a good few weeks when normally they would be like yours and go soon after I also read online that you can have them and its not actually an allergy to anything in particular its just some kind of strange reaction going on with our bodies. I also get the facial swelling too which is horrid when I get both. There is another antihistamine that you can take that might help its called Loretadine that is what I was prescribed when in hospital and it actually got rid of it unlike Piriton and another one that I was prescribed prior to getting preg. Do you have pics of the rash?

Hi Joshua 47,
No pics and I used the Loretadine first...tried every antihystaminic in my cupboard and even the cortsone shots didn't help immediately..will be going for my flu shot today too...yikes!
Nothing new fortunately for me..New year's dinner went fine too so I am keeping my fingers crossed....I don't touch alcohol due to allergies but everything else was just fine...
will stay gardedly optimistic..in the states in 1 week so I can pick up some good products to bring back with me...hoping that it was a 1 off...
Thanks for the input

Just saw this post, haven't been around for a while.

SO SORRY!

Do see your allergist; your throat closing up is NOT COOL AT ALL! (Speaking as the mother of an anaphylactic child...)

Did just want to mention that I had this same sort of reaction once; it lasted for two weeks. It turned out to be a weird symptom of a stomach virus I had picked up, believe it or not! Had to be treated by my Family Doctor, Emergency, AND a top-notch dermatologist (who specialized in hive stuff) before we got it under control...

Hey Gin,
Sorry for the silence but just getting over the jetlag and post travel stress...
all is well but my body seems to be unhappy about something..it is telling me that I am not 100%...got a severe lumbago 2 days before leaving and now I have tendonitis in the opposite achilies tendon...while away I was nauseaous and dizzy for days...seems that I am suffering from some sort of undernourishment or lack that does not allow my body to heal...I bought a suitcase full of dietary suppliments including collagene and anything else that I could think of...will try to build myself up and do some exercise to get stronger...
The allergies haven't come back so I hope that that was incidental as well...seems like it is a weekly thing lately...every week something different...
Advice? I am not complaining...the hernia repair seems to be holding and the pouch is attached so there is a lot of good going on..just these weekly quacks in my life...maybe psyco therapy???? Hubby thinks that I am afraid to be healthy...that I no longer know how to be?????? That there is a blockage somewhere...maybe he is right..who knows?
